REPORT: Kinnikuman, AKA MUSCLE, Set for New Anime Adaptation

A recent rumor suggests that the muscle-clad wrestling anime Kinnikuman might find new life with another anime adaptation.

The Twitter account Manga Mogura RE recently sent out a tweet claiming that a new anime project was coming for the Kinnikuman series. It did not contain information on the potentially upcoming project or the source of information. However, it did state that the rumor came from a “reliable Weibo user.” In the tweet, they also included an image of the title’s latest manga volume cover featuring a collection of the characters — including the titular Kinnikuman and Robin Mask.

Kinnikuman Fans Want More Information

The comments were full of support for the series, with many expressing their excitement at the chance to see the project getting another animated project. One user proclaimed the word “finally!” while another referenced the property’s status as a “shonen classic.” However, some asked for more information regarding the new project, pondering whether it would be a reboot, a remake or a spin-off. There were also questions about the involvement of Toei Animation, the company that has handled the property’s animated adaptations since 1983.

This potential Kinnikuman reboot would not be an outlier in the industry, as the past few years have seen many classic anime titles receiving new adaptations. For example, the popular sci-fi romantic comedy Urusei Yatsura saw a new edition in 2022, as did the popular Trigun series, which Studio Orange adapted into an all-CGI anime in 2023, known as Trigun Stampede.

About Kinnikuman

Kinnikuman is a manga series created by the duo Yoshinori Nakai and Takashi Shimada, known collectively as Yudetamago. It began its serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1979 and continued until 1987. A sequel started nearly 25 years later in 2011 and continued where the original series left off. Its serialization is still ongoing in Shū Play News. The manga received an anime adaptation in 1983, followed by a sequel, Kinnikuman: Scramble for the Throne, in 1991 and a final follow-up with Ultimate Muscle in 2002.

The series follows the exploits of a clumsy superhero called Suguru Kinniku after he discovers his intergalactic origins and gets forced to win a wrestling tournament to retain the title of prince of Planet Kinniku. It originally began as a parody of Ultraman but became a massive success in Japan, spawning sequels, spin-offs, and multiple anime projects.

More information on the potential new project will be reported as it appears.
