Avatar Studios will reportedly bring characters from the Chronicles of the Avatar novels by F. C. Yee to life in upcoming projects.
According to Avatar News, Avatar Studios has begun looking to cast Hei-Ran, a prominent character in the aforementioned books. Not only was she a member of Avatar Kuruk’s team, but she went on to train Avatar Kyoshi as a firebender. It is not currently clear what project Hei-Ran will appear in as multiple projects expanding the world of Avatar are currently in development.
One of those projects is a presently untitled movie that will follow adult versions of the original members of Gaang. According to reports, the film’s plot will occur approximately 12 years after the conclusion of The Last Airbender. A reported casting call also included personality descriptions for the main trio, with Aang described as “adventurous, kind, with a youthful exuberance and energy,” Katara described as “independent, passionate, and determined” and Sokka described as “a charismatic and ambitious man with a wry sense of humor.”
Avatar Studios co-chief creative officer Bryan Koneitzko addressed the future plans for the Avatar franchise in a recent interview, stating, “We still find the Avatar world to be really rich for us creatively… And now we’re getting to expand the franchise in different directions all at once.” Alongside the adult Gaang movie, Avatar Studios is apparently working on a new animated series that will focus on the earthbender who succeeds Korra as the Avatar. It is believed to be set roughly 100 years after Korra’s time and will debut sometime in 2025.
The World of Avatar: The Last Airbender Grows
The projects coming from Avatar Studios aren’t the only recent developments for the franchise. Most notably, Netflix is working on a live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender animated series. Actor Gordon Cormier will portray Aang in the upcoming show alongside Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko.
Moreover, the new mobile game, Avatar Generations, dropped globally back in January and in it, players embark on a globetrotting quest to help Aang fulfill his destiny as Avatar. While the title features tactical role-playing game elements, it also includes gacha game mechanics, leading some to heavily criticize it.
Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are available to stream on Netflix.
