Popular manga series like Chainsaw Man and Spy x Family continue to dominate the New York Times Best Sellers list.
The first volume of the dark fantasy shōnen by Tatsuki Fujimoto claimed the number three spot on the latest bestsellers list for graphic books, while the second volume placed 14th. Volume 1 of Tatsuya Endo’s action comedy series barely missed out on the top ten, coming in 11th place. The eighteenth volume of Jujutsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami was the third manga to make the list and ranked 12th.
About the NYT Bestselling Manga Series’
This isn’t the first time Chainsaw Man and Spy x Family have featured on the NYT’s list of best-selling graphic novels and manga. Both series had volumes rank highly on the list back in November 2022 with the former securing four of the top fifteen spots. Other popular manga series that have appeared on the list include Kōhei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia and Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
Fujimoto first published his Chainsaw Man manga in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in December 2018 before it transferred to Shōnen Jump+ in 2020, where it continues its publication run to this day. Fujimoto’s story follows Denji, an extremely impoverished young man who is recruited by a shady government organization after being betrayed and killed by his mafia employers. Using his ability to transform his limbs into chainsaws, Denji helps the organization hunt down and kill devils.
Spy x Family tells the story of the Forgers, an eclectic bunch that includes Anya, a young girl who can read minds; Loid, one of the world’s most effective spies; and Yor, an endearing but absent-minded woman who is also a deadly assassin. While the narrative features plenty of moments brimming with intense intrigue and action-packed combat, it also showcases wholesome and often comedic moments between the three main characters that form a lovable found family. Endo’s story first appeared in Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ in March 2019, and the ongoing series has so far produced 10 volumes.
Jujutsu Kaisen began its serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump in March 2018 and recent comments from the mangaka indicate the final chapter may appear within the next year. The series focuses on high schooler Yuji Itadori. After eating one of the cursed fingers of Ryomen Sukua, he finds himself recruited by a group of sorcerers who want him to kill the undisputed King of Curses.
