While some are already complaining about the amount of isekai anime flooding the anime market, the genre continues to do well. Each season produces at least two isekai anime, and at least one of them gets a good reception from fans. There is also a good chance the genre is going to stay for good, as its popularity shows no sign of waning.
Reincarnated as a Sword is enjoying a warm welcome from fans of the isekai genre this Fall anime season. The show is filled with monster-slashing action, while also featuring a ton of wholesome moments between its two main characters. While the show is clearly about becoming stronger, it is reminiscent of a certain reverse isekai anime about music.

Ya Boy Kongming! was part of the Spring 2022 anime lineup. It’s a reverse isekai anime featuring the titular historical figure being brought to modern-day Japan. Kongming meets amateur singer Eiko who aspires to make it big in the music industry.
Enamored by the singer’s skills, Kongming swears his loyalty to her. He vows to use everything in his power to help her realize her dream. That means using the knowledge as a war tactician to devise unusual strategies that will open various opportunities for Eiko to shine.
Reincarnated as a Sword Is a Seemingly More Traditional Isekai Experience
Reincarnated as a Sword is one of the few isekai anime airing in the Fall 2022 anime season. Like other titles in the genre, the show starts by bringing its main character to a fantastical world after suffering from a traffic incident. But instead of being brought as a human or a monster, the main character is turned into a sentient sword.
The sword may not have limbs, but it can move around using Telekinesis. It can also level up and gain new skills by destroying the crystals within the monsters. But just as it becomes overpowered, it gets stuck in the mana-sucking ground. It is then saved by the cat-girl Fran, who ultimately ends up as the sword’s owner.
Similarities Between the Two Anime
Reincarnated as a Sword follows the typical isekai route, while Ya Boy Kongming! is a reverse isekai anime series. Even so, the two shows share similar settings. Both of their main characters take a backseat and mostly support the series’ deuteragonist. That is not to say that either of them lacks any skill or ability to stand out from the other characters. On contrary, both of them are more than capable enough to dominate their respective worlds.
Kongming is an unparalleled genius when it comes to war and tactics, and he has proven on multiple occasions that he can apply this wisdom outside of battle. He also has a knack for connecting with big-named stars and using them to his advantage. Similarly, Teacher from Reincarnated as a Sword can easily take on any monster, no matter how strong it is. He has acquired a slew of skills after his killing spree in the anime’s pilot episode.
This being said, their veering away from the spotlight is voluntary. Both of them are captivated by their respective deuteragonist. Eiko’s singing prowess captivates Kongming, while Fran’s pure heart captures Teacher’s affection. Both Kongming and Teacher are willing to offer their skills to their hardworking and talented proteges, even letting them take full credit for achievements they helped acquire.
