Jujutsu Kaisen has one of the most memorable and powerful rogues galleries in modern anime. Due to the vast number of sorcerers that have been reincarnated over the course of the series, the heroes had to face some truly intimidating and dangerous antagonists from as far as a thousand years ago. Aside from their ruthless attitudes and killing nature, what truly made these villains scary were their incredibly formidable Cursed Techniques.

One such powerful ancient Curse User is Uraume, a character who served as Sukuna’s only real ally and one who pretty much worships him as a deity. Their aloof and calm appearance outside of battle shouldn’t fool anyone though, as Uraume holds a place among the strongest characters in all of Jujutsu Kaisen! With their vast pools of Cursed Energy and hostile nature to everyone but their master, let’s see why Uraume’s Cursed Technique is so strong.

First Appearance

Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 53, “Completion”

Debut Date

April 1, 2019

Allegiance

Sukuna, Kenjaku

An ancient sorcerer from the Heian Era, Uraume is a powerful character who is aligned with Sukuna and Kenjaku’s group. Since this period in human history was a time of great strife and hardship, the sorcerers that lived during it had to be much stronger and ruthless than the ones of the modern day just to survive. Sukuna was the most powerful of them all and ruled with an iron fist with Uraume by his side.

Though the details of how their partnership came to be have not yet been revealed, Uraume has the utmost loyalty to the King of Curses, becoming extremely hostile whenever they feel someone is insulting him. Uraume is also the closest thing Sukuna has to a friend and is also someone that he considers to be an excellent chef since he eats humans and Uraume’s ability to cook them was unparalleled. Their Innate Technique also allowed them to store humans for extended periods of time for Sukuna’s later consumption.

Step aside, bottom feeder. Don’t make me wait any longer.

Uraume’s Cursed Technique And Abilities

Uraume’s Cursed Technique is an extremely powerful one known as Ice Formation. This technique allows them to form ice from their Cursed Energy and control it by fashioning it into whatever shape or form that they desire, making it a very versatile technique. Allowing for the full manipulation of ice, the desired effect can make something as small as a sharp icicle on their finger to gigantic structures that manifest all around them and anyone else in an area.

The possibilities and utilization of this technique are seemingly endless due to the adaptability that this power brings. The sheer amount of ice that’s formed also depends on Uraume’s own Cursed Energy reserves, which already seem to be a lot due to them being a powerful ancient sorcerer from the Heian Era and can also be deduced from the times that the technique was shown in their fights.

Extension Techniques of Ice Formation

Frost Calm: One of the greatest uses of this Cursed Technique comes in the form of the powerful extension ability, Frost Calm. With this ability, Uraume creates a cloud of freezing mist from their mouth and blows it toward their opponent, which then expands and encapsulates the target. After surrounding them, the mist suddenly turns into massive pillars of ice that ensnare those caught within them, being exceptionally useful against large groups of people to trap all of them at once, as was seen in the final battle of the Shibuya Incident.

Icefall: Another powerful attack of the Ice Formation, Icefall has a far more offensive utility compared to Frost Calm. Uraume first covers their hand in a glove of ice and touches any surface, sprouting out pillars of ice that are telekinetically shot towards the opponents to freeze them in place upon contact. Once the target has been immobilized by the ice, Uraume then sends down a rain of razor-sharp icicles to skewer their opponent alive. The temperature is lowered by the Cursed Technique surrounding Uraume’s hand, so the technique extension can be launched from any surface.

Uraume’s Other Abilities

On top of the incredible manipulation of ice that their Cursed Technique allows them, Uraume also has access to incredible reserves of Cursed Energy. Due to this, they can use Ice Formation to its fullest potential, manipulating their ice powers without any constraints or limitations. These great Cursed Energy reserves also translate to Uraume’s manipulation of them, as they can effortlessly convert their negative energy to positive energy, which only the strongest sorcerers can do.

This also allows them to fortify parts of their body to be more resilient, being able to shrug off powerful blows such as Momo Nishimiya’s Wind Scythe and partially protecting against Choso’s Piercing Blood. Moreover, Uraume can use Reverse Cursed Technique to heal even some fatal wounds, yet another ability that is only really seen at the apex of Jujutsu sorcery. These abilities come together to cement Uraume’s place among the strongest in all of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
