Hell’s Paradise is one of the most exciting new Shōnen anime to have gotten their start in 2023. One of the most appealing aspects of the anime are the ninjas and their ninjutsu, or ninpo.
Gabimaru and Yuzuriha set themselves apart from the rest of the characters in Hell’s Paradise by being able to use special abilities, which they refer to as their ninpo. These ninpo abilities are fighting tools they picked up in their past as ninjas and are something to be feared, since they grant them a different fighting style than everyone else around them. These abilities affect the body of the users with some fascinating side effects that make these ninjas superhuman.
What is Ninjutsu in Hell’s Paradise?
Ninjutsu, or ninpo, is an ability a ninja acquires through their rigorous training that serves as a tool to augment their combat skills. What is interesting about ninpo is that the user changes their bodily functions in order to execute the skill. Essentially, the ninja is manually altering something chemically or physically and manipulating it to serve the purpose they need.
For example, Gabimaru explains that he increases his body heat in order to light the oils in his skin on fire. Yuzuriha mentions that she consumes certain medicines and poisons that instantly are pushed out through her sweat glands to be used in combat as a sticky slime she has complete control of. Both ninjas alter their body’s chemistry or functions to achieve this superhuman feat and elevate their combat abilities to get an extra leg up on the enemy.
As is mentioned by the Doshi that Gabimaru squared off against and by the Tensen that Yuzuriha and Sagiri fought, ninpo is an application of Tao. Tao is the ability that makes the Tensen and everyone else on the island so powerful. It is impressive that both Gabimaru and Yuzuriha are able to use Tao without even knowing what it is, but it explains why Gabimaru was able to learn Tao by just feeling it off of Mei’s hand.
It also makes sense that ninjutsu abilities are a form of Tao because of its superhuman nature and the special effects it has on the bodies of its users. Gabimaru’s ascetic blaze ninjutsu makes him immune to fire of all kinds. While his Iwagakure training made him a sharp weapon, his ability supplements his defense as much as his offense. Yuzuriha, in turn, is immune to poison thanks to her ability. The ninjutsu of the ninja affects their body in a permanent way by giving them special abilities on top of the ones they already had from ninja training.
Whether it’s being able to light themselves on fire or being able to secrete poison through their sweat, the ninjas of Hell’s Paradise set themselves apart from the rest of the cast in a big way with their ninjutsu. Their ninjutsu also influences their bodies by granting them certain immunity to normally deadly things. Most importantly, ninjutsu’s relation to Tao has been shown to help the user learn Tao quicker, as in Gabimaru’s case.
Hell’s Paradise is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
