Story and Backgrounds
The World’s Best Assassin
Taro Sakamoto was once known in the underworld as an unrivaled hitman; however, he has since retired from that life, getting married and starting a family. Now just the average owner of a convenience store, shadows from his former life continue to follow him, with one of his former associates giving him an ultimatum: return to the life of an assassin, or die.
The Sakamoto Days manga has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine since November 2020, with 16 volumes published so far, 11 of which have been translated to English. The upcoming Sakamoto Days anime series will be produced by TMS Entertainment (Fruits Basket [2019]), with Masaki Watanabe (unit director, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero) serving as director, Taku Kishimoto (series composition, Blue Lock) as series composer, and character designer Yō Moriyama (eyecatch design, Attack on Titan). Along with the cast, it was announced that Tomokazu Sugita, who voices Gintoki Sakata, the main character of Gintama, would be the voice of Sakamoto.
The Rumour Mill
Will Sakamoto Days Be on Netflix?
Last week, there were reports that an article in the May issue of License Global listed the various IPs set to be licensed by Netflix over the course of this year and into 2025, including Sakamoto Days; however, the article cited in the aforementioned reports does not feature the upcoming anime on either list (anymore?), so it is not yet confirmed if the series is set to be on Netflix, nor is there any further information about the series beyond Monday’s announcement, but this is sure to change in the coming weeks and months. Sakamoto Days is set to premiere in January 2025.
