The official title of Daisy Ridley’s upcoming highly-anticipated return to Star Wars may have already been revealed, and it’s about what fans might expect given the franchise’s history with naming things. But how accurate is this information?
Well, despite at least one Star Wars movie staying alive during the writers’ strike, many other projects went on hiatus during the strike. This included Ridley’s new film featuring her return as Rey. The strike did eventually end once the writers of the WGA finally got a fair deal, but Hollywood is still playing catch-up. Of course, this Star Wars movie was still in its early stages during the strike, so not much progress has been made. But there was one particular milestone that would have been significant.

According to Star Wars News Net, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was initially expecting a draft of the script by the end of May. Naturally, that didn’t happen for obvious reasons. But along with the screenplay, a Reddit post had been circulating claiming to have the movie’s official title. It’s bold of them to make such a claim even before a script has been finished. But the proposed title, Star Wars: A New Beginning, may not be fully debunked. It turns out Lucasfilm is still workshopping the idea.
Star Wars News Net has also heard from their sources that the studio has yet to rule out that particular title. More specifically, Lucasfilm is working up to creating an official shortlist of potential titles, and A New Beginning isn’t actually out of the question yet. This is after Lucasfilm debunked a previous rumor about Ridley’s film, which claimed the movie would be called Star Wars: New Jedi Order. So the fact that they haven’t continued that trend with this one could be a good sign.
The currently untitled movie will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who recently helmed 2 episodes of 2022’s excellent superhero series Ms. Marvel. Meanwhile, the script is set to come from Steven Knight, notable creator of Peaky Blinders. The movie is rumored to focus on Rey as she rebuilds the Jedi, potentially featuring other returning faces. At the moment, the new deadline for Knight’s script draft after the strike reportedly sits around the mid-to-late November area. So perhaps that will be a good time for the studio to choose a title. It makes things a bit easier to name a movie when one knows what the movie is actually about.
Between the people involved and Kennedy’s mandate of creative freedom regarding new Star Wars projects, there’s much to look forward to from this movie and others from the franchise. Naturally, it will likely be a while before filming even begins, possibly waiting until late 2024 or even beyond. So, Star Wars fans should temper expectations for now. But even so, it’s still happening.
