Highlights

  • Legendary Entertainment and Sony Pictures have announced the Street Fighter movie’s release date: March 20, 2026.
  • The upcoming film is Capcom’s third attempt at a live-action Street Fighter adaptation, and will hopefully be better than the previous, critically-panned movies.
  • Filmmakers Daniel and Michael Philippou dropped out due to scheduling issues, currently leaving the movie without a director.

Legendary Entertainment and Sony Pictures have officially announced a release date for their upcoming live-action movie based off of the popular Street Fighter series. Like many other classic gaming IPs, Capcom’s iconic fighting game franchise has had its fair share of film and TV show adaptations in the past, the majority of which didn’t turn out all that great. Hopefully, though, this upcoming Street Fighter movie can buck the trend established by its predecessors by bringing the series to the big screen in a way that longtime fans will appreciate.

Since the launch of the original Street Fighter in 1987, Capcom’s flagship fighting game series has gradually worked its way up to become one of the best-selling and most acclaimed video game franchises of all time. The series has had many high points throughout the years and has maintained a consistent level of quality throughout its mainline releases, from the genre-defining Street Fighter 2 to the critically-acclaimed Street Fighter 6. Now, it seems that Capcom wants to capitalize off the success of this seminal fighting game franchise by making another major film adaptation based off of it. However, it looks like it’s going to be a while until fans get to see this movie for themselves.

As reported by Deadline, Capcom’s untitled, live-action Street Fighter film is slated to release in theaters on March 20, 2026. The movie, which is being co-developed and produced by the Japanese video game publisher, was initially announced in early 2023. While there weren’t any story or casting details provided back then, it was revealed that Legendary Entertainment would helm production of the upcoming film alongside Capcom, while Sony would be the ones to distribute it. The twin filmmakers Daniel and Michael Philippou, meanwhile, were reportedly set to direct the video game adaptation at the time. It seems this is no longer the case, however, as the two brothers are said to have dropped out of the film due to scheduling issues, leaving the Street Fighter movie without a director.

Capcom’s Third Live-Action Street Fighter Movie is Releasing in 2026

The 2026 Street Fighter movie will be Capcom’s third attempt at making a feature film adaptation of the beloved video game franchise. The company previously produced two live-action movies based off of the Street Fighter IP. The first film, 1994’s Street Fighter, starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming Na-Wen, and Raul Julia, among other notable actors. Despite receiving widely negative reviews from fans and critics upon release, it was a commercial success. The second film, on the other hand, 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, was a complete failure on all accounts, becoming one of the lowest-rated movies of all time.

Capcom and Legendary have a lot of great source material they can pull from to ensure that the upcoming Street Fighter movie will be more faithful to the games than its predecessors. While it’s still up in the air if they can actually accomplish this, a Street Fighter film done right could easily become one of the best video game adaptations out there.
