First Appearance

Dragon Ball Super, Episode 61, “Zamasu’s Ambition The Storied “Project 0 Mortals” of Terror”

Debut Date

October 9, 2016

Super Saiyan Rage is considered an extremely powerful evolution of the Super Saiyan transformation. Some sources classify it as an advancement of the standard Super Saiyan form, while others position it as an evolution of Super Saiyan 2. The exact designation varies depending on the media, but the Dragon Ball Super Card Game refers to Super Saiyan Rage as incorporating elements of both Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2.

This transformation is exclusive to Future Trunks from the alternate future timeline seen in the Dragon Ball Super anime. The name “Super Saiyan Rage” reflects the intense anger that Future Trunks felt immediately before achieving this powered-up state for the first time. In fact, all anime supplementary material simply refers to Future Trunks in this form as “Super Trunks.”

The Appearance of Super Saiyan Rage

When Future Trunks first transforms into Super Saiyan Rage, he initially takes on the appearance of a Super Saiyan 2. However, his body then temporarily bulks up in a manner similar to Super Saiyan Third Grade. At the same time, he is surrounded by a blue bioelectric aura. Trunks’ blonde hair spikes up even further than his Super Saiyan 2 style. Completing the transformation, his aura expands from a standard golden hue to a dual aura with an intense light blue glow wrapped within the golden color. Particles also emit from his aura resembling those of Super Saiyan Blue and Super Saiyan Rosé. Notably, Trunks’ eyes go blank during the process, reflecting his near-berserk state of anger like in the Legendary Super Saiyan.

Future Trunks can further power up his Super Saiyan Rage form using a Spirit Bomb, becoming a Spirit Bomb Super Saiyan with the same intense blue glow and an initial white aura that expands into fiery blue. This form significantly boosts his strength, allowing him to match up against opponents like Goku Black and Zamasu who previously overpowered him.

How Trunks Achieved Super Saiyan Rage

The specific event that pushed Future Trunks to transform was being defeated by the villainous pair of Goku Black and Future Zamasu. They told Trunks all the suffering endured in his timeline was his fault, breaking him mentally and emotionally. With nothing left to lose and anger consuming him completely, Trunks was able to tap into a new well of power through Super Saiyan Rage. The transformation ceremony sees him briefly take on aspects of Super Saiyan 2 and Third Grade before stabilizing in his enraged form.

You say my choices make me evil?! THEN THAT’S WHAT I’LL BE!!!

When transforming for the first time, Trunks’ energy burst resembled a colossal golden ki geyser that lit up the dark sky with massive blue lightning cracking the land. His every step could crack the ground. Trunks achieved strength, enabling him to fight both Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black and Future Zamasu simultaneously.

Usage Against Goku Black and Zamasu

The Super Saiyan Rage form provided Future Trunks with a huge power increase, allowing him to battle on par with Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black. Previously, Future Trunks could only match Future Zamasu and catch Black off guard in his Super Saiyan 2 form after intensive training in the past. However, with Super Saiyan Rage, Trunks was able to hold his own against both Black and Zamasu at the same time. He used a strategic approach to separate the two enemies and keep them on the defensive. This gave Goku and Vegeta enough time to travel back to the present to find a way to defeat them.

After being healed by Future Mai, Trunks engaged the pair again in this powerful form. He was able to knock Future Zamasu away with a single blast and defeat Goku Black through a relentless assault. The form also granted Trunks enough stamina to successfully seal Future Zamasu with the Evil Containment Wave.

When fighting the fused Zamasu, Super Saiyan Rage was shown to be capable of further power increases. By drawing energy from humans across Earth, Trunks gained a massive boost in power. This empowered state allowed him to easily destroy Fused Zamasu’s body, showing the immense strength of Super Saiyan Rage.

Comparing Super Saiyan Rage to Other Forms

Super Saiyan Rage shares similarities to Vegeta’s enraged Super Saiyan 2 state seen earlier in the series. Both provide tremendous amplification to Super Saiyan 2 that causes the users’ eyes to briefly go blank in their berserk state brought on by overwhelming fury. However, Vegeta’s only enhances Super Saiyan 2 whereas Trunks’ unique transformation also incorporates aspects of the Powerhouse form like his third-grade bulking. Among the various Super Saiyan forms, Super Saiyan Rage stands out as one of the most powerful achieved through extreme emotional duress rather than simply training.

Future Trunks’ Super Saiyan Rage transformation provided a massive boost, allowing him to turn the tides against dangerous foes like Goku Black and Fused Zamasu. Emerging from his peak anger at those threatening his timeline’s destruction, Rage highlighted the Saiyan’s ability to draw out incredible combat prowess from intense emotions. It remains one of the most impressively potent Super Saiyan forms within Dragon Ball Super.
