About Mashle: Magic and Muscles
“One Punch Man Meets Harry Potter”
Mashle is set in a world where magic is commonplace and can be used by everyone. As such, one’s position in society is contingent on their proficiency with magic. Mash Burnedead, a young man who lives a peaceful life in the forest with his adoptive father, Regro, has a secret: he cannot use magic. Instead, Mash has honed his body through years of working out by himself. When he suddenly becomes a target of magicians from the nearby town, he defeats them and soon finds himself enrolled in magic school, where he sets his sights on becoming a “Divine Visionary”, an individual of elite status within the Easton Magic Academy. As Crunchyroll puts it, Mashle is an “off-kilter fantasy in which the power of being jacked crushes any spell”. The manga was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump, where it ran from January 2020 to July 2023, spawning 18 volumes.
The anime was directed by Tomoya Tanaka at A-1 Pictures, with scripts by Yōsuke Kuroda, character designs by Hisashi Higashijima and music by Masaru Yokoyama. The first season of the Mashle: Magic and Muscles anime ran for 12 episodes from April to July 2023, with the second season running for 12 episodes from July to March 2024. The cast included Chiaki Kobayashi (Stark, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End) as Mash Burnedead, Kaito Ishikawa (Tenya Iida, My Hero Academia) as Lance Crown, Reiji Kawashima (Fushi, To Your Eternity) as Finn Ames, Reina Ueda (Reze, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc) as Lemon Irvine and Takuya Eguchi (Loid Forger, Spy x Family) as Dot Barrett. The English cast features Aleks Le (Sung Jinwoo, Solo Leveling) as Mash; Anjali Kunapaneni (Kiruko, Heavenly Delusion) as Lemon Irvine; Ben Diskin (Ban, Seven Deadly Sins) as Dot Barrett; Brian Timothy Anderson (Envy, Fullmetal Alchemist live-action) as Finn Ames and Stephen Fu (Noé Archiviste, The Case Study of Vanitas) as Lance Crown.
So, Is This Season 3?
No Information Yet
Season 2 left off at a very significant point for both Mash and the series as his identity is made public, and having passed his exams, the stakes are far greater than before because his quest to achieve Divine Visionary status is a matter of life and death. If he is executed, his friends could be branded criminals and be put to death. With it becoming more popular to have a movie as a sequel to a TV anime, it is possible that the reason that the format of the upcoming Mashle anime sequel has not been confirmed may point to the possibility that it is a movie. That being said, many are convinced that the news means that there will be a third season of Mashle. Whatever the format, fans of the series will definitely be there to catch it when more information about the project is released.
Mashle: Magic and Muscles is available on Crunchyroll.
