The Story So Far

The Egghead Island arc started in 2022, after the conclusion of the Wano Country arc. It is set on the island of Dr. Vegapunk, who has served as the head scientist for all major projects of the World Government. The Straw Hats went to the island, where they met the different satellites of Dr. Vegapunk. They learned that each satellite had a unique personality and role. After defending the scientist from the attack of CP0, the Straw Hats had to turn their attention towards a traitor who kidnapped the main body of Vegapunk. After tirelessly searching for the culprit, they discovered that it was York who had betrayed Stella after striking a deal with the Five Elders.

She wanted to help them execute Vegapunk and the rest of the satellites in exchange for a lavish life. However, her plans were thwarted, and Vegapunk was rescued. While they were still tending to their wounds, St. Jaygarcia Saturn, along with several top Marine officers, reached Egghead Island. Shortly afterward, Luffy had to engage in an exhilarating battle with Kizaru, which ended in a stalemate. Subsequently, Saturn decided to get involved, and it looked like things would only get worse for the heroes. Luffy was the only person who could actually stand up to face Saturn, but his fight with Kizaru left him in an extremely weakened state. Bonney tried to injure Saturn, but he was unfazed by her attack.

Big News

The Egghead arc also provided updates regarding other notable characters, including Trafalgar Law, Eustass Kid, Blackbeard, and Garp. It was revealed that Blackbeard had engaged in a fight with Trafalgar Law and managed to defeat him and his crew. Law barely escaped with his life, thanks to Bepo. Meanwhile, Eustass Kid and his entire crew were annihilated by Shanks. Like Law, Kid’s Road Poneglyphs were also taken by the Yonko.

There was another tragedy concerning Monkey D. Garp, who had traveled to Hachinosu to free his protégé from the clutches of Blackbeard. Garp was accompanied by a few talented Marines who provided him with backup. However, the Blackbeard Pirates proved too much for the Marines, which forced Garp to take a drastic step. He sacrificed himself so that the young Marines would get away safely.

There was also information regarding the Imu and the Five Elders as they confronted Nefertari Cobra and told him about his ancestor Lily. However, after disclosing the information and seeing Imu, they could not let the king of Alabasta leave the room alive. So they attacked him, but Sabo intervened in an attempt to protect him. Despite his best efforts, Sabo could not keep up with the behemoths, and he would have died if Cobra hadn’t sacrificed himself to give him an opening.

Kuma’a Flashback

The highlight of the Egghead arc has been the flashback of Bartholomew Kuma. The Shichibukai’s past was a mystery, and there was almost no information available about him. However, Oda covered his entire past in the arc. It was revealed that Kuma belonged to the Buccaneer race, which had been prosecuted by the World Government for an unknown reason.

It was also confirmed that Kuma had to let go of his sense of individuality to protect his daughter, Bonney, from certain death. His sacrifice for his daughter cemented his place as the best father in One Piece. His flashback also shed some more light on the God Valley incident. It was revealed that Kuma was present in God Valley when the Rocks Pirates attacked. He stole his Devil Fruit, which was actually meant to be a prize for the winner of the Hunting Competition of the Celestial Dragons. After consuming the Devil Fruit, he ran away from the island with his friend.

Expectations From The Next Arc

The next arc of One Piece is likely Elbaf. For a long time, fans have speculated that the Straw Hats will go to the land of the giants, and with the Egghead arc over in 2024, it is looking increasingly likely that Elbaf will start next year. As an island not linked to the World Government, the Straw Hats don’t have to worry about the Marines. It is possible that Luffy will finally meet Shanks, as both of them are now two of the emperors of the sea.

There will be an emotional moment for Nico Robin as she meets Saul, who saved her life in Ohara. The Elbaf arc will likely reveal the fate of Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law, both of whom were defeated and humiliated by two of the Yonko. Needless to say, the next year is going to be extremely exciting for One Piece fans.

One Piece manga is available to read on Viz Media.
