This segment of the series, which initiates from chapter 119 and closes at chapter 185 in the manga, corresponds to episodes 58 to 75 in the Hunter X Hunter (2011) anime adaptation. During the Greed Island Arc, the series’ protagonists, Gon Frecess and Killua Zoldyck, are transported to a separate, game-like world with its own assortment of rules, obstacles, and enigmas.
The Greed Island plot is significant for an assortment of reasons. It delves extensively into the nen power-system and incorporates further understanding of the Hunter x Hunter lore. Gon and Killua’s intense training and challenges contribute to their character development and pave the way for future arcs. In addition, the introduction of new characters and the exploration of the game’s unique mechanics make this arc memorable and essential to the series.
The Narratives Introduction to Greed Island
The existence of Greed Island, made its debut after the Hunter Examination Arc, whereby Gon returned to Whale Island with Killua and opened a memoir that his father, Ging Frecess, had left for him. Within this given memoir was a video-game-like memory card that was unknown to both Gon and the audience at the time. Following Killua’s brother, the computer fanatic, Milluki Zoldyck’s research into the memory card, he reveals to Gon and Killua that the memory card belongs to an exclusive Hunter game called, Greed Island.
Within the York New City Arc, Gon and Killua discovered the true game’s scarceness and the astronomical prices it fetched at auction. Determined to play, they endeavor to amass as much money as possible; Gon even went to the extent of pawning his Hunters Licence, all in an attempt to place a bid on a copy of the game.
Despite failing to purchase it directly, Gon and Killua found an alternative way to enter the Greed Island game, as they were recruited by Battera, a billionaire collector looking for skilled Hunters to finish the game. This marks the start of their journey through the game’s perilous world.
The Origins of Greed Island
Greed Island is an obscure and risky game that only nen-wielding Hunters can enter. Ging Freecss and his companions created the game, which is renowned for its challenging nature and the fact that participants are only permitted to leave under certain conditions. Furthermore, while Greed Island is a ‘game’, the consequences of the game are real, and death in the game means death in real life.
The development of Greed Island is one of the most intriguing aspects of this arc. The game was developed by Gon’s father, Ging Freecss, and a group of his friends. The name “Greed Island” is an acronym derived from the creators’ names. The creators include:
- G -Ging Freecss
- R -Razor
- E -Eta
- E -Elas
- D -Dwun
Ging went so far as to change one of the creators’ names so that the acronym spelled out “GREED.” This meticulous attention to detail accentuates Ging’s clever and slightly whimsical personality. The island is more than just a game; it is a complex reality created by the nen power-system that transports players’ physical bodies into the game world.
Ging and the other fellow companions of Greed Island’s creation intended the game not to serve as a relaxing pastime but as a means to test and train Hunters in a unique environment. The game is full of challenges that require players to use their nen skills creatively and strategically. Furthermore, the game serves as a personal challenge for Gon, who hopes to learn more about his father by finishing it.
Greed Island’s Lore and Unique Power System
Greed Island is more than just a game; it incorporates the complex nen system, which is fundamental to the “Hunter x Hunter” series. Nen is a technique for using and manipulating one’s life energy, or aura. The game’s mechanics are inextricably linked with nen, making it a difficult experience even for experienced Hunters, but this is also the allure of Greed Island, a platform for the strong to gather, improve, and battle.
Spell Cards and Game Mechanics
The vast majority of Greed Island’s unique abilities revolve around “spell cards”. These cards, which can be collected and used throughout the game, have a variety of effects, including teleportation, healing, and combat upgrades. To complete the game, players must collect 100 of the specified cards. The spells and their strategic applications increase the level of complexity, requiring players to think tactically and creatively with their nen abilities.
Training and Development
A substantial part of the Arc focuses on Gon and Killua’s training. As the environment that makes up Greed Island consists of purely nen users, nen conjurations, and nen beasts, they go through rigorous physical and nen training. This training was held under Biscuit’s supervision, which is pivotal to Gon and Killua’s development as the ensuing arc, the Chimera Ant Arc, will be their greatest challenge.
The Central Events and Challenges in the Greed Island Arc
Collecting All 100 Greed Island Cards
To complete Greed Island, as Gon and Killua were assigned to do before their entrance to Greed Island, is to obtain all 100 cards. Once a player obtains all 100 cards, the game ends and the winner can choose 3 cards to take back with them and use in the ‘normal’ realm.
The Bomber (Greed Island’s Antagonist)
The main antagonist in this arc is Genthru, also known as “The Bomber.” Genthru and his associates pose a significant threat to other players, as they can steal cards and eliminate opponents. His ruthlessness and strategic thinking make him a formidable opponent for Gon, Killua and Biscuit.
The Dodgeball Game
One of the most memorable and important scenes in the Greed Island arc is the dodgeball match against Razor, one of the game’s creators and a powerful nen user. This game is more than just a physical challenge; it also tests your strategy and nen mastery. The stakes are high, and the outcome will have a significant impact on the protagonists’ progress through the game.
Razor has been under strict instructions from Ging Frecess to wait for Gon to arrive at Greed Island and, when Gon arrives, not go easy on him. The dodgeball game is symbolic of Ging’s motivations for Gon to be a powerful and fearless hunter; in essence, Ging paved the way for Gon to be an accomplished Hunter like himself. Therefore, the dodgeball game with Razor is a test for Gon. If he succeeds, he is one step closer to hunting Ging.
Greed Island’s New Protagonists and Antagonists
Biscuit Krueger
Biscuit Krueger, or more commonly referred to as “Bisky,” is an experienced Hunter who plays an important role in the Greed Island story and Bisky’s future in the narrative. Bisky, who was introduced as a deceptively youthful and cute girl, is actually a muscular and powerful woman in her fifties. Throughout the arc, the disparity between her appearance and her true strength serves as a source of both humor and surprise. Her dual nature perfectly captures the complexity of her personality; she is both nurturing and fiercely disciplined, with a playful demeanor and the strictness of a master trainer.
Bisky’s arrival on Greed Island marks a turning point for Gon and Killua. As a Double Star Stone Hunter, she brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that is invaluable to their advancement. Recognising their potential, she takes them under her wing and initiates an intensive training regimen. Her training methods are rigorous and unrelenting, with a focus on improving physical strength, Nen control, and combat strategies. Gon and Killua study under her to hone their Hatsu skills, improve their aura control, and improve their overall combat prowess.
One of Bisky’s most significant contributions was teaching Gon and Killua the value of conditioning and mental fortitude. She introduces them to the concept of Nen exercises and meditation, which will help them better manage their aura and maintain their energy during long battles. Her training focuses not only on physical prowess, but also on strategic thinking and psychological resilience, both of which are essential for surviving Greed Island’s challenges.
Genthru (The Bomber)
Genthru is the primary opponent in the Greed Island arc, known for his ruthlessness and cunning character. His nickname, “The Bomber,” is derived from his nen ability, which allows him to plant time-sensitive explosive nen bombs on his opponents. These bombs can be detonated at his command or with the use of a controlled timer, making him a lethal opponent who instills fear in his competitors. Genthru’s ability, known as “Little Flower,” entails touching his target and saying the word “bomber,” after which he can detonate the bomb at any time, resulting in significant damage or death.
Genthru’s strategic mind and ruthless tactics present significant challenges to Gon and his friends. He forms a trio with his allies, Sub and Bara, using their combined abilities to dominate other players and steal their cards. His goal is to complete the game using any means necessary, including deception, intimidation, and murder. Genthru’s meticulous planning and knowledge of the game’s mechanics allow him to stay ahead of his opponents, making him a dangerous enemy for Gon and Killua.
Throughout the arc, Genthru’s presence is felt as he eliminates competitors and collects the cards required to win the game. His confrontations with Gon and his friends are intense and high-stakes, putting their abilities and resolve to the test. One of the most pivotal moments is the final showdown, in which Gon, Killua, and Biscuit must outwit and defeat Genthru and his allies. This battle demonstrates their development and teamwork as they use strategy, strength, and Nen abilities to defeat The Bomber. Genthru’s role in the Greed Island arc emphasizes the darker aspects of the game and the lengths players will go to win.
Razor
Razor grew up as a criminal who had committed horrific crimes in the past. He led a malicious life until Ging recruited him during the construction of Greed Island. Razor’s role in Greed Island is that of the never-ending game master, as he is currently serving a life sentence. This includes managing specific challenges and ensuring that only the most skilled and deserving players advance. Razor, a former convict who found redemption through Ging Freecss, is unwavering in his loyalty to Ging and commitment to Greed Island’s integrity. His immense strength and nen abilities make him a formidable opponent, and the players fear and respect him.
Razor’s nen ability, “14 Devils,” enables him to summon and control up to fourteen powerful nen constructs. These constructs are extremely powerful and can be used both offensively and defensively, making Razor a versatile and dangerous opponent. Razor also has incredible physical strength and agility, which enhances his combat abilities. His mastery of nen, combined with his sheer power, make him one of Greed Island’s most difficult challenges demonstrated when he is able to send the Phantom Troupe away with full dominance.
Greed Island’s Climax and Resolution
The Greed Island arc concludes with a final showdown with Genthru. Gon, Killua, and their allies devise a complex strategy to defeat him using their nen abilities and spell cards. The battle is intense and represents the culmination of their training and teamwork.
After defeating Genthru, Gon and Killua successfully collect all the necessary cards to finish the game. Consequentially, they are given a special card that allows them to travel to any location. Gon seizes this opportunity to continue his search for his father, ushering in the next chapter of their adventure.
