While Spider-Man fans eagerly await announcements about the development of Spider-Man 4, theories are emerging about who might be the final boss of the franchise.
Marvel’s Spider-Man revived a wide array of villains who challenged Peter Parker and ultimately met their demise. But who could be the next major antagonist? Although Marvel does not appear to have concrete plans for the upcoming Spider-Man movies, fans believe they know who will be the final villain of the saga when it eventually ends.
A new theory circulating among fans centers on the final villains of Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise. While this idea is exciting, it has left fans puzzled because these villains were recently featured in No Way Home. According to a tweet by Alex Perez, fans are convinced that the final two bosses of the franchise might be Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus. Intriguing, right? However, this is where the theory starts to make less sense.
Both Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus made their big screen debuts in Sony’s Spider-Man franchise and have since become fan-favorite antagonists for Peter Parker. Due to their popularity, Sony and Marvel brought them back in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, much to the surprise and delight of many fans. Although the prospect of these villains returning is exciting, the theory does not entirely make sense. This confusion arises from Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn confirming that none of his variants exist on Earth-616 and his return to his original timeline at the end of No Way Home. This could mean a few things: Osborn might not have been truthful, there are variants in the Earth-616 timeline, the studio plans to cast new actors for both villains, or there might be a future loophole in Marvel projects that brings them back. It is not specified when these villains might reappear, but it is suggested they could be the final antagonists when the current trilogy concludes, whenever that may be. One fan noted that according to other fan theories about a new trilogy, this might not happen until Spider-Man 6, which is when Marvel is expected to end the franchise. It is important to remember that this is just a fan theory and not a confirmed fact. Currently, there is no official confirmation about the next Spider-Man movie.
Regarding the plot details of Spider-Man 4, there are almost none. The movie has faced difficulties and multiple obstacles recently, including trouble finding the right director for the job. Rumors suggest that Spider-Man might face The Kingpin’s goons, including Shocker and The Scorpion, though this has not been confirmed or denied. Additionally, Venom is expected to make an appearance, but not as the main villain. Several directors’ names are floating around online, including Justin Lin, Drew Goddard, Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, and Adam Wingard. Alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya is expected to reprise her role as MJ in Spider-Man 4. Additionally, Sydney Sweeney is rumored to be playing Black Cat, and there is speculation that Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Paul Rudd might make appearances as Daredevil, The Kingpin, and Ant-Man, respectively.
Spider-Man 4 is in development at Marvel Studios.
