Rumor: Shogun Lead Actor May Have a Role in Upcoming Ghost of Tsushima Movie

Highlights

  • Insider DanielRPK hints at Hiroyuki Sanada’s potential role in the Ghost of Tsushima film, exciting fans of both franchises.
  • Sanada’s renowned talent and history of success make him a fitting choice for Ghost of Tsushima film cast.
  • Who he could be playing is unknown, though Kazumasa Sakai and Lord Shimura are both viable options.

A recent report from a credible insider suggests that Shogun star Hiroyuki Sanada could land a role in the live-action Ghost of Tsushima film. Though it’s, of course, best to take leaks and rumors like this with a grain of salt, the prospect of actors from FX’s critically-acclaimed historical drama portraying characters from Sucker Punch’s hit samurai game may excite many fans of both franchises. Additionally, such a collaboration could be a promising indication of the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima movie’s quality, at least in terms of casting choice.

In order to broaden the reach of PlayStation’s many first-party IPs, Sony has lately been doubling down on making movies and TV shows based off of its hit video game franchises. Following on the heels of popular film adaptations like Uncharted and Gran Turismo, 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima is next in line to get the big screen treatment. This news was first revealed in 2021, when Sony announced that Sucker Punch’s beloved open-world samurai game would receive a live-action film adaptation helmed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski. Though PlayStation hasn’t shared many updates about the Ghost of Tsushima movie since its announcement, some recent rumors have circulated about the status of the project, one of which is especially tantalizing for fans of FX’s Shogun.

In a post they recently made on their Patreon account, insider DanielRPK claimed that Hiroyuki Sanada, the lead actor from the universally-acclaimed Shogun TV show on FX and Hulu, is currently in talks with Sony for a role in the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima movie. Although this report doesn’t suggest that Sanada’s involvement in the film is set in stone or anything along those lines, it is, nonetheless, an encouraging indication that it could actually happen.

For the uninitiated, Hiroyuki Sanada, who played Lord Yoshii Toranaga in Shogun, is renowned for his recurring roles in the popular shows Lost and Westworld, in addition to films like The Last Samurai, Sunshine, Avengers: Endgame, John Wick 4, and The Twilight Samurai. Due to his impressive track record, if these rumors do end up panning out, then Sanada’s addition to the cast of the film could check a box on many people’s Ghost of Tsushima movie wish lists.

Hiroyuki Sanada Would Be a Perfect Fit For the Ghost of Tsushima Movie

From the little information that’s been revealed about Chad Stahelski’s adaptation of Sucker Punch’s samurai game so far, it seems like it may share a lot in common with Shogun. For instance, the Ghost of Tsushima movie will apparently have a mostly-Japanese cast, with all dialogue being spoken in Japanese and subtitled for international audiences. Though Shogun does have some English-speaking characters, it, too, is filled with scenes spoken entirely in Japanese. As such, with Hiroyuki Sanada nailing his role in Shogun despite speaking little English, he would be a perfect fit to play a character like Lord Shimura or Kazumasa Sakai in the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima film.
