Despite the low success rate, Gon passed the exam with flying colors, standing out among the graduates through his sheer will and ingenuity. Accompanied by his new friends Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio, the team works together extensively through the exam’s different stages to advance to becoming hunters.

When Gon faces an uphill battle against his opponent, Hanzo, in the final round, Gon’s attitude and determination cause Hanzo to give up, leading to Gon winning and passing the exam against the odds.

During the Hunter Exam, all the participants were flown to the third stage of the exam, with Chairman Isaac Netero also accompanying the group. While aboard the airship, Netero challenges Gon and Killua to a sparring session that involves trying to take a ball away from the Chairman. As one of the strongest hunters, Netero crushes the pair, with Killua giving up soon after starting. Despite this, Gon continues playing, aiming to get Netero to use his right arm.

After recklessly trying to take out Netero, Gon crashes, although the young hunter succeeds in getting Netero to use his other arm. Gon’s accomplishment, though minor, was an extremely impressive feat, with Gon still not aware of Nen and Netero being considered possibly the strongest Nen wielder in the world.

After reaching the 200th floor with ease, Gon and Killua encounter deadly fighters who happen to be experts at Nen, with the pair lacking the skill. After Hisoka stops the pair from fighting on the 200th floor, Gon and Killua learn Nen under Wing, developing their skills at an incredible rate.

Once becoming a Nen user, Gon enters the 200th Floor with Gon picking up a victory against the bully Gido. Soon after, Gon finally gets his matchup with Hisoka, with Gon landing significant strikes on Hisoka despite still losing, and gaining experience in the process.

In Greed Island, Genthru and his pals cause chaos and mayhem by terrorizing players to gain the 100 cards needed to clear the game. After Genthru comes for Gon’s card, Gon, Killua, and Bisky devise a plan to take out Genthru and his group.

Once isolated, Gon and Genthru battle, with Gon initially struggling due to Genthru’s superior Nen. Through detailed planning by Gon and his friends, Gon is able to incapacitate and defeat Genthru at the cost of his hand, with Genthru’s bomber abilities proving deadly in battle.

4 Going Toe To Toe With The Phantom Troupe

In the Yorknew City arc, Gon faces his toughest test up to that point as he, Kurapika, Killua, and Leorio go toe-to-toe with the infamous Phantom Troupe. After Kurapika takes out Uvogin, one of their members, the Phantom Troupe comes looking. After Gon and Killua tail the group, they get caught, although troupe members find Gon to be an intriguing individual.

After escaping, Gon, along with his friends, are involved in a war of wits and strategy against the troupe. In several incidents, Gon bravely faces off with the troupe despite their reputation as the most frightening group around.

3 Defeating Greed Island

After joining the game that his father Ging created, Gon plays Greed Island with the help of Killua and Bisky, with the group attempting to collect all 100 cards. Despite early struggles, such as learning the game’s concept and rules, Gon starts raking up the cards while developing his Nen through Bisky’s teachings.

To complete the game, Gon joined forces with other players to attain certain cards that required teamwork, such as the Plot of Beach card, which required 14 players. Gon’s success in Greed Island was momentous, as he became the first player to beat the game, just as his father anticipated.

2 Defeating Pitou

In the Chimera Ant arc, Gon goes through many emotions as he deals with many hardships, such as failure and the loss of friends. When Gon’s friend Kite dies to Pitou the Chimera Ant, Gon feels partly responsible, leaving him in a fit of rage and confusion. When Gon and company aimed to take down the Chimera Ants, Gon’s sole focus was on getting revenge on Pitou, eventually leading to their showdown.

Despite Pitou being one of the strongest Nen users in existence, Gon performed a transformation that saw him reach his potential as a hunter, becoming the most powerful version of himself. Once transformed, Gon decimates Pitou, ending her life at the cost of himself and his Nen.

From the very start of Hunter x Hunter, Gon’s primary goal is to find his father, Ging, who abandoned him when he was just a baby. After defeating the Chimera Ants, Gon was left in a coma, with his father still choosing to avoid meeting his son. After Killua and Alluka heal Gon, Ging and Gon finally meet during the 13th Hunter Chairman Election.

After all of Gon’s growing pains throughout the story, he achieves his goal despite his father acting nonchalant in their meeting. After their short first meeting, the pair meet at the peak of the World Tree, with Gon finally getting closure on his dad’s whereabouts and future endeavors.
