It was great for fans of Classroom of the Elite to see the show finally get some recognition, following the release of the second season and the announcement of the third. It is a great psychological anime that can compete with some of the best of the genre. With the premise introduced in the first episode, Classroom of the Elite features the prestigious Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School filled with the very best students the nation has to offer.
Undoubtedly, the characters constantly featured are some of the most manipulative and smartest high schoolers in anime. The protagonist, Ayanokoji, pushing the barriers of what it means to be a genius, who operates in the shadows. The anime is filled with plot twists that challenge the expectations of the viewers and even the characters, and here are some of the best ones.
6 Sakayanagi’s Knowledge Of Ayanokoji’s Past
Season 2, Episode 13
In the post-credit scene of the final episode of season 2, after the completion of Ayanokoji’s plans for Ryuen, he stumbled upon Sakayanagi, A Class leader, who claimed to have met him before, 8 years ago in the White Room, after which he claimed not to remember her. She called him the ultimate masterpiece of the White Room, the false genius that she takes on the responsibility of burying.
This is a prologue to the psychological battle that is going to ensue between Sakayanagi, who believes talent and genius are determined at birth by one’s DNA, and that people like Ayanokoji who gained their status through hard work and experience will never reach the likes of her who was born gifted.
5 Kushida Kikyo’s True Personality
Season 1, Episode 3
While attempting to return Kushida’s phone after she forgot it at his apartment, Ayanokoji stumbled upon an enraged Kushida, visually expressing her hate for Suzune. This was a very huge contrast to the normal personality she displays in class, which is that of a kind and loving person who always worries about the well-being of others.
She threatened to frame Ayanokoji for rape if he told anyone about her, and put his fingerprints on her chest area for insurance. She also made him promise not to tell anyone about it, then proceeded to act like nothing happened at all. This came as a shock to Ayanokoji, which made him question himself about which of Kushida’s personalities was her true one.
4 Ayanokoji’s Control Over Ryuen’s Plans
Season 2, Episode 12
Ryuen hatched a master plan that involved breaking Karuizawa who was under the protection of the D Class mastermind, to find out who they are and thoroughly deal with them through violent means. He had Karuizawa trapped in a secluded place with little to no lights and continuously tortured her by emptying buckets of water on her head.
After Ayanokoji came to her rescue, and surprisingly overpowered some of the strongest and physically built characters in the show, including Ryuen. Ayanokoji then claimed to be the true engineer of the situation in which they could only solve their problems using violence, using Karuizawa as a pawn in his plans to destroy Ryuen with his specialty, brute force.
3 Class D Winning The Competition On The Island
Ryuen and Katsuragi hatched an extensive plan during the Island test, where Ryuen will give the Class A members 200 points worth of goods and help them discover the class leaders of Classes B and D, in exchange all members of Class A will transfer 20000 points every month to Ryuen till he graduates.
However, due to Ayanokoji’s incredible perception and a bit of sheer luck that Suzune Horikita, Class D’s Leader, fell ill, he was able to make himself the new leader of D Class, thwarting the plans of Ryuen and Katsuragi, causing Classes A and C to get third and last respectively in the Island test, with Class D coming out triumphant.
2 Kushida Losing The Bet With Suzune
Season 2, Episode 9
Kushida tried to sabotage Class D in the sports festival by leaking their participation list to Ryuen, in an attempt to have Class C annihilate them. Seeing as Kushida only did that to foil Suzune’s goal of reaching Class A.
Suzune challenged her to a duel in the coming examination, in which if Suzune won, Kushida would stop trying to sabotage her, and if Kushida won, Suzune and Ayanokoji would have to leave the school. Kushida planned with Ryuen who was to set the questions for Class D, to get them ahead of the exams. Unbeknownst to Kushida, Ayanokoji had convinced Ryuen to give her fake questions, threatening him that Suzune knew all about their plans already. As a result, Kushida lost the bet.
1 Ayanokoji’s True Personality
Season 1, Episode 10
Following the success of D Class in the Competition on the Island, Ayanokoji convinced Hirata that Suzune was responsible for their success, saying that she deduced the leaders of A and C Class. Seeing as Ayanokoji was the true mastermind behind it, Suzune spoke to him privately to thank and ally herself with him, as getting the credit for something that huge would help her make friends amongst her classmates.
Ayanokoji’s true personality is revealed in this scene, and it shows him as a boy only intent on winning; a boy who sees everyone around him as tools whose purpose is to further his ambitions and take him closer to winning. This was a complete shock considering that the audience was made to believe he genuinely had Suzune’s best interests at heart.
