Of all the people in Smallville who learn about Clark Kent’s secret alien heritage and powers, Lois Lane has the most complex revelation. Clark feared telling his friends about his secret for many reasons. The most pressing concerns were not being accepted by them and losing their friendship, or putting them in harm’s way.
The latter, however, often occurred and the burden cost Clark his relationship with his best friend, Pete Ross. The rest of Clark’s friend that learned about his identity and powers were supportive. Many, such as Chloe Sullivan, would aide Clark in his journey to becoming a hero. Lois was the last of Clark’s closest friends to learn the truth. But the reveal in DC‘s Smallville is more complicated and drawn out than the others.
Lois Lane Kisses Smallville’s Green Arrow
When Lois suspects Oliver Queen to be Smallville‘s Green Arrow, Clark protects Oliver’s identity by dressing up as the Green Arrow. But Lois, believing it was Oliver under the suit, takes her journalistic curiosity a step further and kisses Green Arrow/Clark. Then, Oliver appears and Lois realizes her mistake before slapping the costumed Clark. Lois to Clark:
“Wow! Whitesnake. I must have really liked you.”
After Lois puts on some red kryptonite laced lipstick, she becomes incessantly attracted to Clark, who tries to decline her advances. Once she finally kisses Clark, his personality changes due to the red kryptonite lipstick. Lois realizes, however, the kiss was the same as the Green Arrow’s. Clark then admits to not only covering for Oliver, but also reveals his powers to Lois. This brief romance ended with Jimmy Olsen spraying Lois with the antidote, which unfortunately made her forget about Clark’s identity. Though, she confesses to Clark that giving him a Whitesnake CD meant she had feelings for him.
Clark Kent Tells Lois Lane His Story In Smallville
In season 8 of Smallville, Clark was blackmailed into revealing his alien identity. He asks Lois to pen his story and once again demonstrates his powers to her. Relieved to be included in Clark’s secret, Lois agrees. However, she’s disappointed to learn Clark’s other friends have known about his secret for quite a while. This lack of trust to confide in Lois deeply upset her.
Lois remained a consummate journalist and wrote an inspiring story about Clark Kent/Blur. But, his blackmailer, Linda Lake, incited chaos by convincing the public that Clark was an alien threat. While Lois wanted to persuade the people of Clark’s innocence, he chooses instead to go back in time with the Legion ring to prevent the reveal. Lois hoped he would tell her again.
Lois Lane Finds Out After She Goes Back In Time
Lois Lane of an alternate timeline had come to know about Clark’s powers after being saved by him. By the end of season 8, Smallville’s Lois Lane has in some way learned and forgotten about Clark’s identity twice. Perhaps a third encounter with the truth will stick with Lois.
The introduction of the Wonder Twins complicated Clark’s identity as the Blur while trying to maintain contact with Lois. As he often used a scrambler to speak with Lois when he called, the Twins disabled it, which revealed Clark’s voice to Lois. Luckily, it pays to have friends. Smallville‘s Chloe helps Clark Kent keep his secret by calling Lois and pretending to be the Blur as well. This certainly confused Lois.
As her relationship with Clark intensified, he decided to end the Lois-Blur relationship. Giving Lois a goodbye kiss, however, again gave away his secret identity to her. She realized the Blur was Clark, but chose not to let him know that she was aware. Technically, Lois comes to the truth at this moment, though it’s unverifiable. It isn’t until Clark confesses, however, that her inference is confirmed as truth in season 10. Clark to Lois:
“I want you to know me completely with no secrets because you’re the one. You always will be.”
Lois’ final revelation of Clark’s secret mirrors her first. The drawn-out affair helped the two build the trust Clark needed to be sure that his truth wouldn’t hurt their relationship as it did with many of his other friends in Smallville. Lois proves she could be trusted by keeping Clark’s secret before he confides in her the truth, which is similar to his relationship with Chloe becoming a confidant. Instead of being a burden, Clark’s secret inspired Chloe and Lois to become heroic partners, and to help Clark be the best hero he could be.
