Glen Powell’s social media activity seemingly hinted that he could join the DC Universe as the next Batman because he has started following James Gunn and Andy Muschietti.
Powell has been rumored to be joining DC as the next caped crusader. His star is on the rise after his performances in Top Gun: Maverick, Hit Man, and Twisters. Robert Pattinson’s Batman 2 is due in two years, but many are already talking about the next actor, who could be the Dark Knight of Gotham after Pattinson. One of the names that came up was Powell. There was no official announcement yet, but Powell ignited the Batman speculations after following Gunn and Muschietti on Instagram.
DC fans noticed that Powell had already followed Gunn, DC Studios co-CEO. Gunn co-produce and executive produce every film and TV series under the DC Universe (DCU). The writer and director has been attached to several superhero films and series, including the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. He also followed Muschietti, the Argentine filmmaker who directed The Flash and whom Gunn hired to helm the Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Powell’s move to follow these two prominent DC figures sparked rumors he could be the next Batman, per ComicBookMovie.com.
Powell previously said that he wasn’t really interested in playing a superhero. However, he was open to playing Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. “I was always a Batman guy,” he told GQ magazine in May. “I would have a wild take on Batman. It definitely would not be like a Matt Reeves tone – it’d probably be closer to Keaton. Oh, sick!” Landing the Batman titular role will be a leap to Powell’s career, who appeared in the 2012 movie The Dark Knight Rises starring Christian Bale. In the film, he played the character of a Wall Street broker who found himself on the wrong side of Tom Hardy’s Bane. In one scene, Bane hit Powell’s character. “I get my head smashed in by Bane in The Dark Knight Rises,” Powell proudly shared.
Powell’s decision to follow Gunn and Muschietti could hint that he would join the DC Universe. There is a strong tie between Gunn and Muschietti in Batman. In fact, the only project that ties them at the moment is the Batman reboot Batman: The Brave and the Bold. However, there’s also the possibility that Powell followed the duo for another project, not Batman, or for no reason at all other than to follow them on social media. There is no doubt that Powell could play any character because he is versatile and this is evident in his previous roles. He could be anybody like the confident and competitive Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin in Top Gun; the solitary and friendly Gary Johnson in Hit Man; the arrogant and heartless Ben in Anyone But You; and the charming but reckless storm-chaser Tyler Owens in Twisters. Some were even convinced that he could succeed Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. However, he has no interest in playing the mutant with adamantium metal claws, but he could also change his mind in the future. At present, Pattinson still has one Batman film on the way and there are no talks about whether he will reprise the role for Batman 3 or if DC Studios will look for a new actor to play the iconic superhero after The Batman Part II. So fans should wait and see what’s in store for Powell and Batman.
The Batman Part II will hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
