Jujutsu Kaisen’s storytelling is brimming with different plot twists and unexpected turns. Gege Akutami’s work is known for its quick pacing and high-stakes story, all of which are made more evident by how quickly the story’s direction in the story can change. Many readers and anime watchers were shocked at the lengths Gege would go to maintain his story’s flow and uniqueness.
The abundance of plot twists is also helped by the many mysteries that are set up almost immediately in Jujutsu Kaisen. Yuji Itadori is shown to be exceptional in some of his characteristics, such as his ability to be Sukuna’s vessel. At the same time, a mysterious antagonist wearing Suguru Geto’s mask continues to stir and manipulate the events. Those mysteries kept people engaged and were the focal points of some plot twists.
9 Junpei’s Death
The Cruel Reality Of Jujutsu World
One of the first major twists in Jujutsu Kaisen, often cited as one of the first season’s grim highlights, is Yoshino Junpei’s death. The bullied boy who fell victim to Mahito’s manipulations has been a focal point of the story. He befriends Yuji Itadori, and the latter considers trying to recruit him into Jujustu High.
Alas, this friendship is cut short when Mahito ruthlessly kills Junpei by transfiguring him and forcing Yuji to watch. This dramatic development was unexpected for many anime watchers as Junpei was a part of the opening, which made it seem like he would join the protagonist team, only to be unceremoniously killed in such a manner.
8 Kenjaku’s Reveal
The Parasite Beneath The Mask
Since the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen’s main story, all antagonists have been manipulated by the mysterious figure of the so-called master of the curses. Those who read JJK 0 would recognize him as Suguru Geto, but he died at the end of the previous storyline, and his mysterious resurrection is not explained for a long time.
The scar on his forehead is a major hint about this character’s nature, something Suguru had lacked before. In the Shibuya arc, it was revealed that Geto’s body became a host for an ancient sorcerer-turned-parasite named Kenjaku, who lived on to become one of the major antagonists in the future.
7 Itadori’s Extermination
The Unexpected Return
Shibuya Arc has become a midway climax of Jujutsu Kaisen. It saw a major clash between the sorcerers and disaster curses, and many losses were made on both sides. Many unnamed civilians died, too, especially during Sukuna’s rampage when he took over Yuji’s body, which ensured the direction of the next arc.
Because Yuji’s body acts as a vessel for Sukuna, the sorcerers deem him too dangerous and order his execution, along with that of Principle Yaga. The main twist of this moment is the return of Yuta Okkotsu, who is named Yuji’s executioner. He hasn’t appeared in the story since 0, so it was a shocking reveal.
6 The Betrayal Of The Zenin Clan
The Pariahs Of The Family
After the Shibuya Incident, Fushiguro Megumi was named the new leader of the Zenin clan, but his decision was not met with universal approval. Many Zenin members did not want to accept him and conspired to kill him along with Maki and Mai, the twins without cursed energy who were reviled by the clan.
Maki always despised her family, but this was the last straw that escalated the conflict. She encounters her father and learns the true depths of his disdain for the sisters. He blames their birth for his inability to become the head of the clan, leading to a large conflict that ends in the near-total extermination of the clan.
5 Choso, Yuji’s Brother
Unexpected Blood Ties
Ever since Choso’s introduction to the story, he has been a character defined by the deep love he has for his family, specifically his brothers. He seeks to protect them from any danger and always stands by their side, which causes Choso to snap after their deaths, seeking revenge against Yuji Itadori and Nobara Kugisaki.
However, during his fateful battle with Yuji, Choso felt the same sensation that he did when his brothers were near death. This caused him to stop and leave, succumbing to his visions of a world where his brothers and Yuji lived as a family. This made him realize that even though he did not know how Choso and Yuji were related by blood.
4 Sukuna And Yuji’s Link
The Circumstances Of Birth
One of the recent plot twists sheds some light on the link between Yuji and Sukuna. This has been a topic that many fans speculated on for years due to similarities between their appearances and how Yuji can act as Sukuna’s vessel and hold him back, something most other mages can’t accomplish.
Sukuna tells Uranus about Yuji’s origins. His father, Jin Itadori, was a reincarnation of Sukuna’s twin brother, whom the King of Curses ate in the womb to survive. This establishes a deeper link between two characters and why one acts as a vessel for the other, as well as explaining visual similarities between Sukuna and members of Yuji’s family.
3 Kenjaku Being Kaori Itadori
Yuji’s Dark Past
An earlier twist related to Yuji’s birth was the reveal of his mother. Kenjaku has been established as a villain who has been switching bodies for generations, often using their identities to mask his own, but leaving a notable mark of a forehead scar that identified the parasite infiltration, and those were the elements that gave away his part.
Kaori Itadori, Yuji’s mother, was shown to have the same forehead scar when she conceived Yuji, implying that Kenjaku possessed her body. This was later confirmed and revealed to be part of Kenjaku’s plan to create a perfect vessel for Sukuna, destined to play a role in his scheme.
2 Sukuna In Megumi’s Body
An Old Pact
Ever since the show’s first episodes, Ryomen Sukuna has shown interest in Megumi due to his potential and powerful techniques. However, Megumi remained out of Sukuna’s reach because he was bound to Yuji’s body. The King of Curses played the long game by making a binding vow with Itadori to allow him to control his body for one minute.
This vow returns at the end of the Culling Games arc when Sukuna suddenly takes control of Yuji’s body. He used the minute to put all of his cursed energy into one finger and then force-feed it to Megumi, which allowed Sukuna to take control and take his most powerful form yet, forcing the sorcerers to fight a deadly opponent.
1 Gojo’s Death
The Fallen Hero
A moment that shocked and split the fanbase and created a lot of general response was the death of Satoru Gojo. Gojo was the most iconic character of the story, with many fans. While the fact of his death at the hands of Ryomen Sukuna may not have been unpredictable, the way Gege Akutami went about it certainly was.
At first, Gege did everything to set up Gojo’s victory, showing his triumph, Sukuna’s fear and even having one of the characters declare that Gojo won outright. However, the next chapter sees him reunite with Suguru Geto and Kento Nanami in the afterlife, revealing that he lost to Sukuna, eventually showing Gojo’s lifeless body.
