A Quiet Place: Day One Ending, Explained

Quick Links

After the resounding success of 2018s A Quiet Place and its sequel in 2020, the horror franchise goes back to the very start of the creature attacks with the new prequel, A Quiet Place: Day One, starring Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn in the leading roles. It was released on June 28, 2024, and it is expected to be a big hit for Paramount Pictures with a projected $40-50 domestic gross in its opening weekend of release.

John Krasinski, who directed the first two movies, has stepped aside for Pig director, Michael Sarnoski, to take on the reins. Krasinski developed the story of A Quiet Place: Day One with Sarnoski and remains a producer on the project. The Bikeriders director, Jeff Nichols, was initially set to write and direct the movie, but creative differences led to his departure.

Sam (Lupita Nyong’o) is a terminally ill cancer patient, who resides at a hospice in New York City, and relies on the company of her cat, Frodo. She is a poet, but has lost all motivation to write due to her crippling illness. She is encouraged to go on a group trip into the city to the theater by her nurse, Reuben (Alex Wolff), but Sam has one condition if she is to agree to come along: she wants pizza from her favorite place, called Patsy’s in Harlem.

Turns out, the theater performance is actually a puppet show which Sam is less than enthused by, and she sneaks out of the theater to grab some snacks. Reuben spots her outside the venue, and informs her that, due to unforeseen circumstances, the group must leave the city immediately. However, Sam wants her pizza that she was promised and kicks off, but reluctantly agrees to get on the bus, as the group prepares to leave.

As they get on the bus, the city is hit by large objects from the sky and the alien creatures begin their brutal attack. Sam is knocked unconscious, and later on, she wakes up inside the theater, re-united with Frodo and fellow survivors of the attack. A man called Henri (Djimon Hounsou) tells her to remain quiet as the creatures respond to the noise, as the military swoops in and bombs the bridges to prevent the aliens from escaping.

Sam meets a law student from England called Eric, (played by Stranger Things star, Joseph Quinn) who appears from a flooded subway entrance. Their initial interaction is due to Eric spotting Frodo wandering around, and following him back to Sam. She tries to get him to evacuate the island, but he follows Sam back to her apartment, and helps her break the door down to retrieve her pain medication.

Sam and Eric decide to travel to Harlem in search of pizza, but are followed by the creatures, but manage to avoid their wrath, and Eric manages to get Sam’s medication from a pharmacy, and they visit a club where Sam’s father used to play jazz music. She tells Eric that they used to get pizza from Patsy’s, and wants to recreate this experience before her death.

Patsy’s has been destroyed by the alien attacks, but Eric manages to get hold of some pizza and writes Patsy’s on the cardboard box, in order to give Sam her dying wish. They play cards, and eat the pizza, while Frodo also jumps in to get a piece of pie for himself. They leave the bar and spot two boats leaving the city, filled up with survivors. Unfortunately, the creatures attack the pair as they leave, and Sam hands Frodo to Eric, and she starts smashing car windows to distract the creatures, while Eric and Frodo jump in the water, and start swimming toward the boats, with the creatures unable to follow as they can’t swim.

Henri pulls Eric aboard the boat, and later on, Eric finds a note in his jacket from Sam, giving him instructions on how to look after Frodo, and she thanks him. The movie ends with Sam walking through the empty streets of New York, as she listens to “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone, using her earbuds she has attached to an iPod portable speaker, to avoid the attention of the creatures. Sam is very frail by this point, and decides to unplug the earphones, and let the music play aloud. She smiles as she waits for the creatures to attack. A creature appears behind her, as the screen cuts to black, heavily implying Sam will be dead in the moments after, and there is no post-credits scene, in keeping with the franchise’s traditions.
