The release date and poster for Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Parasyte have just been announced. However, fans are not as excited as initially expected.

Netflix’s new live-action adaptation, Parasyte: The Grey, has been in development for some time. Initial news came out in mid-2022, with an anticipated premiere a year later, which, unfortunately, did not happen. Since then, fans have been speculating about the adaptation’s premise.

Netflix has finally announced Parasyte: The Grey will premiere on April 5. Along with this news, they also released the poster for the upcoming release. However, the poster only seemed to confirm fans’ theories, leading to mixed reviews. Fans have quickly expressed their opinions on the Parasyte subreddit regarding the news. “I’m not even sold on the poster… I’m not exactly optimistic but I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised,” wrote u/DemiFiendRSA

Disappointed by the previous adaptation of the beloved Parastye manga, fans have voiced their skepticism about the upcoming Netflix production. As the first details emerge, fans have begun to speculate about the story’s direction, and subsequent news only seems to confirm their suspicions. While the adaptation is meant to be based on Hitoshi Iwaaki’s 1989 Parasyte manga, it is evident that the new series will take a different narrative path, drawing only loose inspiration from the source material. Manga and anime fans typically frown upon departing from the source material. The recent poster release has only solidified previous theories, revealing that the main protagonist will not be Shinichi Izumi but a girl named Su-in, portrayed by Jeon So-nee. Fans were disappointed by the news, especially as it excluded their favorite duo – Shinichi and Migi – from the adaptation.

The decision to transform the Parasyte adaptation into a Korean Drama, or K-drama, was quite a surprise. While fans were initially caught off guard by this news, many have expressed optimism, citing the Korean film industry’s dedication to adaptations and praising the potential for impressive special effects that could bring the story to life. Additionally, fans were pleasantly surprised by the choice of director – Yeon Sang-ho (known for Train to Busan). With his esteemed reputation in the industry, many believe the Parasyte adaptation has the potential to be genuinely good. As a result, expectations are rising. Even Iwaaki himself expressed his excitement when the series was announced, saying, “I am most excited that this is ‘a new story’; while I am the author of the original manga, I could also be a member of the audience that experiences thrill and awe.”

Despite mixed online opinions and lingering doubts among fans, the decision to transform Netflix’s adaptation of Parasyte into a K-drama has sparked intrigue. With acclaimed Train To Busan director Yeon Sang-ho leading the charge, the series promises a fresh narrative approach that has both fans and skeptics eagerly awaiting its release.
