Card battle storylines were popularized during the early 2000s after production studios took up these intriguing narratives. Several card battle anime such as Yu-Gi-Oh! and Dual Masters have been eternalized as classic childhood shows. However, the card battle theme is quite expansive and versatile, populated by several unexplored manga that are yet to receive an anime adaptation.
Some base the narrative entirely around card battles, while others use these fights as a backdrop for the main plot. Mangaka have incorporated novel mechanics into their card battle themes, meaning each manga features a unique premise and card-fighting action. While card battle narratives are known for their on-screen animations, these card battle manga do the theme justice with their vivid panels and detailed art styles.

Destroy All Humankind. They Can’t Be Regenerated deviates from the usual action of card battle manga, using the theme merely as a background for the burgeoning friendship. Hajime can’t seem to beat his middle school rival Sawatari in any competition, be it academia or sports. When Hajime discovers that Sawatari is also invested in the card game “Magic: The Gathering,” he comes up with a plan to finally beat her at something.
With a deck specifically crafted to counter hers, Hajime places a bet, stating that he would do anything she proposes if he were to lose. This bet marks the beginning of their friendship, which is sure to blossom into much more later on. While the manga’s name hints at something much more grave, the narrative itself is wholesome and romantic, accompanied by some card battle action.
