Demons in the Demon Slayer series have roamed the earth ever since the Heian Era, this was the era that Muzan turned into a demon because of an experiment gone wrong when he was trying to cure himself of a terminal illness.

Ever since then, Muzan has been in search of ways of making himself immortal and to not be afraid of the sun killing him, as demons cannot survive in the sun. He planned on achieving his goals by finding the blue spider lily or by capturing Nezuko and devouring her since he found out that she could walk in the sun without harm.

The Rise Of Muzan

In order to fulfill his goal, Muzan began creating demons by giving humans who were at their weakest or dying his own blood, transforming them into demons. Muzan later became the leader of the Twelve Demon Moons, an organization that was made up of the most powerful demons who were created to carry out his bidding. By doing so, he becomes the sworn enemy of the Demon Slayer Corps. The demons that Muzan creates only care about themselves and eating humans in order to become stronger. They also fear Muzan because, just as he was able to give life to them, he is also capable of taking away the life of a demon. The transformation of a human to a demon is a grueling process, as they crave human flesh and forget about morals or any sort of reasoning. They are also unable to eat human food as it does not digest properly within their bodies anymore.

The tragic story behind humans that turn into demons is also a development point in the series, as Tanjiro comes across many demons who have had traumatic pasts and had no choice but to become demons to either gain revenge, save themselves from death or to become stronger. There are also humans who were turned into demons by Muzan without consent, such as Tamayo and Nezuko. Muzan also gifts his blood to demons who have done work to please him, as his blood is known to enhance the blood demon art abilities of a demon, making them stronger. Because of Muzan’s blood inside the demons he created, he is able to use them to see the world through their eyes and also keep close watch on them.

Types Of Demons

Demons come in various shapes and sizes and each of them has unique abilities of their own. The first type of demons are the ones that look more human than demons. It is hard to tell the difference between them and a normal human, without closer inspection, such as examining the eyes for strange colors or markings or even pointed nails and pale skin. A few examples of these types of demons are Muzan, Rui, Daki and Akaza, whose human-like appearance makes it easier for them to hide among humans. Another type of demon is known as semi-humanoid. These demons don’t look exactly like humans and have visibile defects in their appearance, making them look like half human, half demon-like creatures. A few examples of these types of demons are Hantengu and Kyogai.

Finally, there are demons who embody the very nature of their evil. They barely look human and bear more resemblance to monsters. These demons are horrifying to look at because of their disfigured bodies and multiple body parts. A few examples of these types of demons are Gyokko and the Hand Demon. On the other hand, not all demons are evil demons and there are demons who also take it upon themselves to protect humans and who are against Muzan. A few of these good demons include Nezuko, Yushiro, and Tamayo.

Demon Slayer is available to stream on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
