Highlights

  • Dr. Vegapunk’s influence intensifies in the Egghead Incident, revealing hidden truths about the Void Century.
  • Vegapunk’s satellites face uncertain fates amid mayhem, tension rising as the final stretch approaches.
  • Each satellite embodies different aspects of Vegapunk’s personality, playing key roles in the unraveling saga.

In a short span of time, Dr. Vegapunk went from a mysterious figure whose influence was ever-present in the backdrop of the One Piece world, to the individual who was at the very center of the Egghead Incident. During a long broadcast that he planned in the event of his passing, Vegapunk illuminated some of the hidden truths behind the Void Century and the true nature of the world, while setting up the final stretch of the race to Laugh Tale in grand fashion, at the very end of One Piece Chapter 1121.

At this point in time, the majority of Vegapunk’s six satellites as well as his main body are all either dead or incapacitated due to all the mayhem and fighting that had occurred on Egghead Island. Currently, the final condition of most of his bodies are known, but some still hang in the balance and Eiichiro Oda might still surprise everyone when deciding which ones will make it out of the Egghead Arc. Hence, here is an update on the status of each one of Vegapunk’s bodies, and how they could play a role in One Piece going forward.

How Did All The Vegapunks Fare In The Egghead Arc?

Vegapunk’s name and accomplishments were well-known to many characters the Straw Hat Pirates encountered throughout their journey along the Grand Line, and expectations were high by the time he finally appeared at the start of the Egghead Arc. The first of the seven Vegapunks to be introduced was of course, Lilith, after which it was finally revealed that the genius scientist had split his consciousness into six separate satellites, in addition to his main body.

By the time the Egghead Arc’s main conflict had been set up, there were many concerns about Vegapunk’s chances of survival due to the death sentence on his head that had been issued by the World Government. In fact, a cohort of CP0 agents — including Rob Lucci and Kaku — followed by Admiral Kizaru and Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, as well as a host of Marine battleships helmed by Vice-Admirals arrived on the island with the express intent to destroy Vegapunk’s research and assassinate him midway through the arc.

The main cause for all the pandemonium was Vegapunk’s research into the Void Century, which he had conducted after visiting the island of Ohara and seeing the scholars’ determination to protect their work, even as they faced certain death. Unfortunately, after evading the forces assembled to eliminate them for a time, most of the Vegapunks had to confront their own deaths, and only a few remain alive as of One Piece Chapter 1121.

Perhaps the most balanced of all the satellites, Shaka embodied the “good” within Vegapunk, and often acted as a mediator between the others. Designated as Punk-01, Shaka was the one who explained the reasoning behind the plight faced by all the Vegapunks to the Straw Hat Pirates.

Moreover, he also shared critical details about his investigation into the Void Century during and after his journey to Elbaf. As chaos descended on the island and Vegapunk’s main body disappeared, Shaka left Zoro and Luffy to seek out the Stella, but was ultimately shot in the head and killed by the traitorous York just as he found them trapped in the basement.

Representing the “evil” side of Vegapunk as Punk-02, Lilith was the first satellite to formally appear in both the manga and anime, and accompanied the Straw Hats at every step of their adventure. Although her rashness and impulsive tendencies did escalate some situations, she played a huge part in the Thousand Sunny’s escape from Egghead Island’s Labophase.

Right when the crew was trying to use the Coup de Burst to launch towards the sea, Atlas struck Lilith, knocked her out, and disabled her connection to Punk Records, allowing the Straw Hats to take her aboard the Thousand Sunny without any fear of York tracking her movements. At present, it is near certain that she will accompany the crew, and play a role in the remainder of the Final Saga.

Reflecting the side of Vegapunk that deals with the process of “thinking,” Edison’s boundless energy as Punk-03 was a defining feature of his personality. This could be observed in how he was perpetually overwhelmed by ideas for new inventions, even as Egghead Island was besieged by Marine battleships.

As the Straw Hats tried to find a way for the Thousand Sunny to launch into the sea from the Labophase, Edison flew through the Frontier Dome in order to extend the island clouds and guarantee the ship’s safe passage. Once Saint Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro cut through the lower half of the Labophase, he was unable fulfill his mission. He was also desynced from Punk Records soon after, and his current fate is unknown.

Composed, observant, and always measured in his approach to dealing his fellow satellites, Pythagoras encapsulated Vegapunk’s attribute of “wisdom.” Dedicated to his job of determining the scientific implications of the work done by the other Vegapunks, Pythagoras, as Punk-04, specialized in data collection and analysis.

Naturally, this led him to get extremely excited whenever he saw an invention produced by the other satellites in action. While searching for the Stella on Shaka’s orders, Pythagoras was cornered and destroyed by the Seraphim S-Snake, just as he was trying to prevent her from petrifying more of the Straw Hats.

One of the more aggressive satellites from among the six, Atlas, or Punk-05, was the manifestation of Vegapunk’s propensity for “violence.” Despite this, she was also quite amiable and talkative, but her reckless tendencies could overpower these traits due to how easily she was provoked.

Atlas’ first solution when it c ame to solving anything was to use physical force, and she adhered to this philosophy until the very end. When the Thousand Sunny’s flight from the Labophase was blocked by Saint Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro, Atlas sacrificed herself to subdue him, and was subsequently destroyed in a violent explosion after sustaining critical damage.

As the personification of Vegapunk’s greed with the designation of Punk-06, York is an extremely lazy and gluttonous individual with a personality that appeared to be quite vapid on the surface. Unfortunately, all this proved to be a facade as she was later revealed to be the traitor that leaked information about Vegapunk’s research on the Void Century to the Five Elders, in exchange for being made a Celestial Dragon.

In a way, this perfectly sums up why York possesses all of Vegapunk’s darkest traits, ranging from arrogance and a lack of morality, to a complete disregard for anyone other than herself. By the end of the Egghead Arc, York has sided with the World Government in trying to thwart the Straw Hats’ escape.

As Vegapunk’s original body, the Stella was regarded as the world’s foremost scientist, having contributed many crucial inventions to the One Piece world. Previously part of an illegal research collective known as MADS, Vegapunk was later made to work for the Marines’ Special Science Group (SSG). Vegapunk’s research into the Void Century was the main reason behind the events of the Egghead Incident, as the World Government issued an assassination order on him.

Near the climax of the Egghead Arc, he was impaled by Saint Jaygarcia Saturn and later fatally injured by Admiral Kizaru. Upon flatlining, a prerecorded message he had set up in the event of his death was broadcast to the entire world. Within this lengthy message, Vegapunk revealed a number of truths about the Void Century, before declaring that the One Piece would eventually change the world once it is found.

One Piece is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
