Dragon Ball: Gotenks’ Unique Moveset, Explained

Highlights

  • Gotenks is a fusion of Goten and Trunks, using attacks from both Saiyans.
  • Gotenks’ unique moves include Die Die Missile Barrage, Galactic Donut, and Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack.
  • Charging Ultra Buu Buu Volleyball is a variation of the Galactic Donut, used once against Super Buu.

The concept of fusion is one of the most beloved aspects of the entire Dragon Ball franchise. By taking two separate warriors and having them merge, a brand-new fighter is formed whose power is not only the sum of their two constituents but is also magnified on top of that. Though it is used sparingly in the franchise, it remains the ultimate trump card when facing an incredibly powerful opponent!

One such fusion is the iconic Gotenks, birthed from the merger of the youngest Saiyans in Dragon Ball, Goten and Trunks. This is a fan-favorite character who is known as someone with one of the most unique and fun move sets in the entire franchise, so let’s take a look at all of Gotenks most powerful attacks and go over why they’re so integral in making him such a beloved character.

Goku and Vegeta’s Finishers

Just like Gogeta and Vegito, Gotenks can use the attacks of both of the Saiyans that have merged to form him. In this case, Gotenks can also make use of the powerful finishers belonging to Goku and Vegeta, since these moves are those that are used by their sons when they’re separated, making it possible for their merger to use them as well.

Goten’s own final move is the Kamehameha that he learned from his father, so it also went into Gotenks’ arsenal. He charged up the attack against Super Buu but was unable to use it since it sapped his remaining power, forcing him to defuse. Moreover, he can also use Vegeta’s powerful Final Flash, which he got from Trunks. He used it in his Super Saiyan 3 form when he fought against Super Buu outside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

Die Die Missile Barrage

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 262, “Unlucky Break”

Debut Date

April 26, 1995

Story Arc

Buu Saga

One of Gotenks’ most recognizable moves, the Die Die Missile Barrage has seen its way into most of the Dragon Ball video games. While similar to a standard continuous volley of Ki attacks that have been seen time and time again in the series, this one is far more powerful. Not only is each single bullet that he fires much stronger than regular Ki attacks, the speed is also unlike any other, making this move very hard to dodge.

Usage

After transforming into his Super Saiyan 3 state in the battle against Super Buu outside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Gotenks uses this powerful attack on him. The rapid succession and overall power of this move were quite noteworthy, as Piccolo told him to stop because he may end up causing a lot more destruction than they anticipated. Moreover, it was strong enough to completely destroy Super Buu’s body, though he regenerated.

Galactic Donut

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 258, “Super Moves of Gotenks”

Debut Date

March 1, 1995

Story Arc

Buu Saga

One of Gotenks’ signature techniques, the Galactic Donut is an extremely unique manipulation of Ki. Gotenks first waves his index finger in a circular motion above his head, creating a ring or ‘donut’ of Ki that has the power to ensnare anything that he wants within it. After the donut has been created, he holds it up similarly to the Destructo Disc and homes it in on his enemy, lowering it down and trapping them so they can’t move.

Usage:

Gotenks used this move for the first time against Super Buu in the hopes of tightening it around him so it would slice him apart. However, Buu was able to break free of it and even used it in his fight against Ultimate Gohan after absorbing Gotenks. Most recently, in Dragon Ball Super, Gohan used this technique on Moro.

A handful that I just made up… My own moves! That is what real warriors do, you know?

Charging Ultra Buu Buu Volleyball

images/news/2024/6/27/dragon-ball-gotenks-unique-moveset-explained_4.jpg

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 261, “Gotenks is Awesome”

Debut Date

March 22, 1995

Story Arc

Buu Saga

While technically a variation of the Galactic Donut, the Charging Ultra Buu Buu Volleyball is largely considered by most fans of the series to be an entirely different move altogether. By releasing several Galactic Donuts at the same time, they all surround Gotenks’ opponent and trap them within a ball of Ki, following which Gotenks and Piccolo proceed to play volleyball with it, inflicting massive damage to the enemy!

Usage

This attack has only ever been seen once in the entire franchise when Gotenks used it on Super Buu. After the villain destroys Kami’s Lookout in an attempt to hit Gotenks and Piccolo with his Mystic Ball Attack, Gotenks finds an opening to release many Galactic Donuts at once. These donuts surround the villain and ensnare him into the ball of Ki which initiates the Volleyball attack.

Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 258, “Super Moves of Gotenks”

Debut Date

March 1, 1995

Story Arc

Buu Saga

Perhaps the strongest and most iconic of all of Gotenks’ techniques, the Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack is one of the most bizarre and interesting manipulations of Ki ever seen in the franchise. By taking a deep breath, Gotenks exhales out many ghost-like beings of Ki that all have his appearance and personality. These ghosts are incredibly dangerous as they explode the moment they touch anything, inflicting a ton of damage in the process, but perhaps the strangest part about this move is the fact that each ghost seems to be sentient!

As strange as it sounds, Gotenks has barfed out what appears to be a ghost of himself!

Usage

The more Gotenks’ power level increases, so does the potency of the ghost’s attack power. The move was first seen against Super Buu when Gotenks released 10 of these ghosts at once and 4 more later on. After he had been absorbed by Super Buu, the villain also gained access to this attack, as seen when Ultimate Buu used it against Vegito in their fight. It functioned the same way, only now, the ghosts took the shape of Buu and followed his commands.

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
