The artful anime-inspired hand-drawn fantasy game Afterimage releases on April 25 after a hugely successful Kickstarter last year, which smashed its funding goal by over 600%.
A hand-drawn Metroidvania-style game, Afterimage emphasizes non-linear levels and has exciting storylines in a ruined landscape. After a long wait, Metroidvania fans and the game’s backers can finally look forward to playing this elegant, beautifully done masterpiece.
Afterimage’s Storyline
The game’s story begins in Engardin, a world protected by primeval goliaths’ as ordained by god’s will. Engardin, a prosperous land, fell after humans launched a war on the goliaths to plunder the gifts bestowed upon them by god. As humankind’s ambition grew, war overcame Engardin leading to the human territories turning to ruin. In the present day, players follow Renee, a girl who loses her memories and seeks to recover them to learn the secrets of the past as she embarks on a quest to rescue her mentor. However, in her quest to regain her memories, Renee doesn’t realize the effect she’s having on the world around her. Her story takes place years after the aforementioned cataclysmic event called “The Razing,” which nearly ended human civilization. The events set into motion by Renee will determine the new world’s fate.
