Jujutsu Kaisen is a strange, yet remarkable series, but with the latest chapter of Gege Akutami’s dark fantasy shonen manga, things have become even stranger. In one chapter, readers are given a strange emotional shift, an intense battle, a marriage proposal — and cannibalism.
Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 217 starts with a conversation between Yorozu and Sukuna. Yorozu shows a glimpse of yandere tendencies toward the calm and collected Sukuna, and a fight ensues. Yorozu can’t win, but in her mind, this is the ultimate act of love, and she’s willing to do anything for a special someone.
Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 217 is a double-edged sword. On one hand, the action scenes are great, with impressive line work and paneling that delivers what every fan of Jujutsu Kaisen has come to know and love.
On the other, the sudden emotional changes and lack of buildup to such a revelation is laced with dark comedy, which will leave fans chuckling in confusion as to how out of pocket the chapter is. There is a double dose of foreshadowing as well as a monologue on cannibalism. Chapter 217 goes there, and its disturbing themes are even told in the form of a haiku by Yorozu.
While not the best chapter to release, the English translation makes the chapter incredibly enjoyable, handling complicated dialogue — like Yorozu’s haiku — incredibly well. The art is equally strong this chapter, as expected of Gege Akutami.
Unfortunately, the plot progression feels unfocused, and maybe that is the point considering how unhinged Yorozu is meant to be, but a stronger build-up to the insanity would have been appreciated. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea and may even end up leaving a few fans of the manga divided, but one thing is for certain — there is never a dull moment when it comes to Jujutsu Kaisen.
