Death is a common theme in many stories, and One Piece is no exception. The series, known for its epic adventure and battles, has seen many characters come and go. Given that it is set in a world where pirates roam free in search of treasure, death is a logical natural occurrence. However, even with all the deaths that have occurred in the series, the Going Merry’s demise remains one of the most impactful and emotional moments in One Piece.
As a ship, the Going Merry is not just a means of transportation for the Straw Hat crew but a character in its own right. Throughout the series, the ship becomes an integral part of the crew, and its final moments are both heart-wrenching and awe-inspiring. The ship’s demise is a poignant moment that resonates deeply with fans of the series, and that’s largely due to how the Going Merry is portrayed during its last few arcs.
The Going Merry Is Humanized Through the Klabautermann
The death of the Going Merry is not simply the loss of a ship but also the loss of a beloved character. Throughout the series, the ship is given human-like qualities, allowing fans to connect with it on a deeper level. This is achieved through the introduction of the Klabautermann, a spirit believed to appear in ships that are well-loved by their crew. In One Piece, the Klabautermann represents the spirit of the Going Merry and is instrumental in personifying it. The presence of the Klabautermann is also a testament to the Straw Hats’ love for Merry, even if they aren’t the most skilled at maintaining it.
Furthermore, the Klabautermann adds to the emotional impact of the Going Merry’s death by giving the ship a voice and personality. It makes it possible for the ship to communicate with the crew, expressing its heartfelt emotions during crucial moments. This personification makes the Going Merry relatable and empathetic, allowing fans to easily emotionally invest in it — and this investment is ultimately rewarded by the ship’s demise.
The Going Merry’s Final Sacrifice Makes Its Death More Tragic
During the “Water 7” saga, the Straw Hat Pirates learn the unfortunate state that the Going Merry is in. They are forced to decide whether to perish with Merry or leave it at Water 7, which is also the reason why Luffy and Usoop fight each other. However, the two eventually put their differences aside after Robin is kidnapped by the CP9. They both take up arms and give chase to their captured nakama. However, another member who follows them is none other than the Going Merry.
At the time, the extreme high tide known as the Aqua Laguna arrives in Water 7. The Merry has been abandoned and ends up at what is known as the ships’ graveyard. Seeing Iceberg, it makes a plea to the legendary shipwright. It asks to be fixed, even just enough for one final voyage. The moment that Iceberg finishes patching it up, it sails alone toward Enies Lobby and ultimately manages to save the entire crew.
Through its sacrifice, the Going Merry’s loyalty to the crew is highlighted in a profound way. As a character in its own right, the ship’s willingness to give up its life to protect its nakama is a testament to the deep bond that has developed between them. The Going Merry’s selfless final wish and the viewers’ emotional attachment to it then make it near impossible for One Piece fans to not shed a tear or two at seeing the ship’s final moments.
