When it comes to the Invincible series, there are few enemies quite as terrifying as the Grand Regent of the Viltrumites, Thragg. Acting as the true antagonist of the series, Thragg poses one of the most significant threats the heroes of Invincible face. He is capable of taking on some of the series’ heaviest hitters with ease, only needing a slight break before taking on his next victim.

Like the Viltrumites as a whole, Thragg has a complex and interesting backstory, but just being a Viltrumite doesn’t mean he’s going to be friendly with Mark. On the contrary, the two men have one of the most brutal battles in the entire series. Exactly what Thragg does and who he brutalizes across the series may be a mystery to some, but in due time, fans of the Invincible series will know exactly how dangerous he can be.

There are plenty of great moments from Thragg that sum up his character well, but one of the best comes from his own thoughts:

To all who make themselves enemies of the Viltrum Empire–! Prepare for your deaths!

Thragg is the unopposed leader of the Viltrumites, and easily the most powerful of all of their people. He was quite literally born with the intention for him to be the strongest of their people, and he lived up to that in a hurry. After ending a Viltrumite civil war, Thragg would claim the role of Grand Regent of the Viltrumites and begin his search for the heir to the king he had killed. Believing that the heir to the king had likely died at some point during the destruction caused by the Scourge Virus, Thragg eased into his unopposed rule, not knowing that both Omni-Man and Invincible were out there to one day oppose him.

After leading a war that put him at odds with Omni-Man and Invincible, Thragg would eventually learn that Omni-Man was the heir he had been searching for. Being changed by his son, Omni-Man opted to have Thragg exiled for his brutality, but this wouldn’t work out as he would kill Battle Beast in an epic fight, go back into hiding, and rebuild his fallen empire. Eventually, Thragg would rise up once again to challenge Invincible and Omni-Man, killing anyone and everyone who would dare to stand in his way.

What Are Thragg’s Powers?

Thragg’s Powers:

  • Superhuman strength, speed, endurance, stamina
  • Flight
  • Space survival
  • Healing factor
  • Delayed aging
  • Invulnerability

Like Omni-Man and Invincible, Thragg has the benefits of having Viltrumite heritage, giving him plenty of incredible powers. With the ability to fly, immense strength and speed, and being able to survive on an outer space adventure, Thragg is a dangerous enemy. Without knowing precisely how old he is it is hard to say how long he could live, but knowing that he is thousands of years old, it’s clear that Thragg is not only powerful and smart, he is also nearly impossible to kill. He’s a master fighter and he has lifetimes of experience leading a planet of people, giving Thragg the ability to take over pretty much any planet he wants whenever he wants.

Considering he was bred with the purpose of being the strongest Viltrumite in existence it shouldn’t come as a shock to learn he is vastly superior to Omni-Man and Invincible. Thragg was even capable of killing the seemingly unbeatable Battle Beast in a fight while seriously injured (though Battle Beast had wounded himself to make the fight fair). He also handed Invincible and Omni-Man their own butts on numerous occasions, literally ripping each of them in half at different points in the story.

Thragg’s One Known Weakness:

  • He, like other Viltrumites have sensitive ears

When The End Of All Things story arc finally rolls around, it seems pretty clear that the Invincible series is reaching its final conclusion. The battle between Invincible and Thragg is on the horizon, with Invincible and the forces of good taking a stand against Thragg and his army. Initially, Invincible isn’t even able to take on Thragg, with the villain instead electing to take on Omni-Man. Sadly, the battle doesn’t go Omni-Man’s way, with Thragg severely injuring him by tearing him in half, leaving Mark as the last chance to stop the villainy of Thragg. This was no different than earlier in the series as Thragg had already been responsible for the trauma’s that Invincible’s brother Oliver Grayson faced.

Just to drive home how twisted he is, Thragg is never one to pass up on belittling those he feels are beneath them, even to Invincible:

You can accomplish anything when you recognize those lower than you are fodder to be used as you please! Look at them! Weak. Useless. The Viltrum Empire is already dead. You just won’t admit it.

After all the conflict that Invincible has had with Thragg, it’s finally time for the two to clash. In order to defeat Thragg, Invincible pulls one of the bravest moves possible, fighting him directly in the heat of a massive sun. The two Viltrumites trade brutal blows as the sun slowly eats away at their flesh, but neither of them is willing to back down. The two battle right to the core of the sun, but thanks to a little help from some armor, Mark is able to just barely squeak out a win against Thragg by biting the villain’s throat out. From there, Thragg would be disintegrated by the heat of the sun, leaving Invincible as the victor, though he does require a little help from the alien Allen in order to avoid meeting the same fate as Thragg.

Invincible is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
