Star Platinum is the most recognizable and famous Stand in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Belonging to Stardust Crusaders protagonist Jotaro Kujo, Star Platinum is regarded as the strongest Stand in-universe. With blinding speed, overwhelming strength, and the ability to stop time, Jotaro is almost unbeatable with his powerful Stand. But a very popular theory has emerged in the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure fandom. Some fans believe Star Platinum is not a mere Stand, but Jonathan Joestar manifested as Jotaro’s power, protecting his great-grandson from beyond the grave.
Is there any truth to this theory? What evidence is there for this? Jonathan reincarnating as Jotaro’s Stand might be more possible than you’d think. Let’s break it down.
Jonathan Joestar’s Transcendent Will
An Eternal Protector
Jonathan Joestar was the son of George Joestar and foster brother to Dio Brando. After Dio became a powerful vampire thanks to the Stone Mask, Jonathan learned Hamon from Will Zeppeli. With the use of magical, sunlight-infused martial arts, Jonathan defeated his brother and his zombie army. However, Dio comes back with the help of his henchman, and eventually puts an end to Jonathan’s life, with Jonathan dying with Dio in his arms, embracing him like a loving brother, in contrast to Dio’s absolute evil.
Maybe we really are two as one… I even feel a bizarre friendship between us. And now, our fates have truly become one and the same… We’ll disappear together as this ship explodes.
-Jonathan Joestar
Jonathan was defined by his never-ending kindness and love. He was a true hero and gentleman, a ray of sunshine and hope in a dark world. Jonathan always sought justice against evil and to protect the innocent, and his will to battle evil transcends time and generations. Every single one of his descendants has inherited this from him. All members of the Joestar lineage have an innate instinct to battle evil and do good, in one way or another. No matter how different in personality the Joestars are from their grandfather, they all seek justice.
Time is a very important theme in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and it feels fitting that Jonathan’s will transcended time to forever battle Dio, always standing proud against him, as an unstoppable force of justice.
Star Platinum, The Proud Warrior
Stand Proud Until the End of the World
Star Platinum is instantly recognizable for its blue eyes, purple and blue skin, and wavy black hair. But as for his abilities, his Stand Rush while shouting “Ora, Ora, Ora!” is as iconic as it gets. While most Stands have a level of artificial and alien appearance, Star Platinum is rather humanoid, his face is especially remarkably human-looking. Moreover, it feels familiar. While yes, he looks quite a lot like his master, Jotaro, he also has a distinct resemblance to Jonathan Joestar.
“I’m back from hell, Dio!”
-Jonathan Joestar
On a deeper look, Star Platinum and Jonathan share many similarities. The broad shoulder pads, the battle gloves, the gold details, and the gloves, Star Platinum carries over many design elements from Jonathan. And even with his powers, Star Platinum is known for his barrage of punches, which is a common technique for many Power Type Stands, and regular humans can’t perform anything similar besides a few exceptions. However, there’s one human that displayed an extremely powerful barrage, way before Stand powers existed: Jonathan’s Sunlight Yellow Overdrive. Jonathan used this technique to defeat Bruford. Before the rise of Stands, Jonathan was the only human to employ something like this.
It was ultimately Jotaro and Star Platinum who battled and delivered the killing blow to Dio and The World. By destroying The World, he destroyed Dio’s body, and then when Jotaro and Joseph exposed the remains to the Sun, Dio was no more.
One of the most important pieces of evidence comes from a plot point that has been the object of confusion for audiences, Star Platinum and The World being the same type of Stand. Star Platinum and The World share speed, strength and, most importantly, the ability to stop time. But why is that?
Dio has taken over Jonathan’s body. From the neck down, Dio’s body is that of Jonathan’s decapitated body that he possessed shortly after Jonathan died. This means, that when Dio pierced himself with the Stand arrow and gained The World, he effectively pierced Jonathan’s body, meaning, The World is partly Jonathan’s power. Star Platinum was awakened in Jotaro right after Dio gained his stand, as a sort of countermeasure to Dio’s rising threat. Every Joestar alive at the moment did as all of them are connected to Jonathan through their souls.
Is Jonathan Joestar Star Platinum? There may never be concrete confirmation, but it is quite an interesting theory to delve into, as it provides a new perspective on Jotaro’s iconic ghostly companion.
