The following contains spoilers for Episode 6 of KonoSuba Season 3, “A Farewell to This Lavish Lifestyle!,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.

After screwing up by dying early in the battle and misusing the body-swapping Divine Treasure, Kazuma has finally run out of ways to stay at the castle with Princess Iris. Still, he can’t leave yet, not before he steals the Divine Treasure as per Eris’s request. With Chris leading him, Kazuma sneaks into the castle to grab the treasure before Iris can come to harm.

The end of the Princess Iris storyline coincides with a surprisingly action-packed sequence, showcasing Kazuma at his cleverest and strongest. Along with that, there are still plenty of laughs throughout the episode, making for a fun, hilarious, and exciting end to this little arc. Of course, there are still quite a few episodes to go before the season ends, so the best is still yet to come.

Kazuma’s Despair

Kazuma’s last little bit of mischief with the body-swapping Divine Treasure obviously crosses the line, and now even Iris is upset with him. Add to that his growing infamy due to his slovenly display when he was a guest at the castle and failure to distinguish himself with either his attempts to capture the thief or the defense against the Devil King’s Army, and Kazuma is essentially the laughingstock of the royal capital. The last nail in the coffin is driven in by Claire, who has even more reason to dislike him than ever before.

Sobbing in his bed, Kazuma suddenly hears the sound of rocks hitting his window and looks out to see Chris, who once again entreats him to join her in finding the Divine Treasure in the palace. Kazuma admits that the body-swapping Divine Treasure exists, but doesn’t think it will do any harm. Chris then explains that if one of the bodies is killed post-body swap, the swap becomes permanent. In other words, the Divine Treasure could be used to swap bodies endlessly, essentially allowing the user to achieve eternal life. Shocked, Kazuma resolves to tell the palace, but Chris warns against doing that, as if the nobles learned what the Divine Treasure could do, they’d start trying to find ways to misuse it.

Ultimately, Kazuma and Chris decide to sneak into the castle to steal Princess Iris’s necklace disguised in new outfits, with Kazuma wearing the mask Vanir gave him. After quickly establishing who the leader is between the two of them, Kazuma and Chris successfully infiltrate, but an indiscretion from Kazuma leads to the two of them being discovered. Thankfully, they are easily able to evade the guards with a combination of Kazuma’s magic and Chris’s thief skills.

Eventually, they are confronted by more royal guards, with Claire and Rain at the forefront. Chris immediately looks to escape, but Kazuma, knowing that he will be kicked out of the capital, insists on going forward, motivated by his worry for Princess Iris, who he has bonded with during his week in the capital. He suddenly begins fighting against the guards, taking out Claire and a number of guards with Drain Touch alone. Bolstered by the mask’s unique properties, Kazuma easily makes short work of them and Kyoya Mitsurugi, who shows up partway to assist. They blast through the remaining guards and into the princess’s chamber, where Darkness stands guard. Darkness immediately recognizes them, but Megumin, Aqua, and Iris do not. With Claire and Mitsurugi coming up from behind, Kazuma and Chris decide to go for broke and try to use Steal on Iris as they make their escape. Chris and Kazuma manage to steal the necklace, just barely managing to escape the clutches of the princess’s guards.

After the theft, Darkness immediately finds Chris and Kazuma and physically coerces them into demanding an explanation. Kazuma then reveals that while Chris managed to steal the necklace, he ended up stealing Iris’s ring instead. Darkness tells Kazuma that it is the ring Iris is meant to give to her betrothed, and even having it means he is in danger of being killed. Soon after, Kazuma and his party explain the situation behind the necklace to the princess, who starts to believe the thieves infiltrated in order to help her. Kazuma sees it as a chance to confess to being the thief to impress Iris once again, but when Iris expresses her admiration for the silver-haired thief, who she mistakes for a boy, Kazuma resolves to keep quiet after all.

As Kazuma’s party prepares to leave, the princess has one last farewell. Darkness encourages Iris to give Kazuma some words of encouragement, and after a short squabble with Megumin, asks Kazuma to visit her again someday. Back home, Kazuma is distraught at having to be separated from Iris, while back at the castle, Iris reveals internally that she did indeed know that the thief was Kazuma, and hopes he keeps the ring safe, as whoever defeats the Devil King will be offered the chance to marry the Princess.

In a post-credits scene, we see Alderp abusing one of his servants. It turns out that Alderp was the one who originally owned the Divine Treasure, and is furious to find out that it has not only been stolen, but it has also been sealed away. While it’s not certain what the rest of the season will have in store, it’s clear that Alderp will play a big part in its events.
