From the new movie topping Scream 6‘s best part to what Ghostface could look like, fans are eager to get answers to some of Scream 7‘s biggest questions. After Scream 6 arrived in movie theaters in January 2023, fans immediately wondered who could star in another movie. Although several legacy characters appeared in the sixth movie in the popular slasher franchise, Neve Campbell chose not to return to Scream 6. Once Scream 7 was announced, fans hoped that Campbell would play final girl Sidney Prescott again.
Now that Scream 7 is officially underway, there are a lot of fan debates about whether the Scream 7 cast will be big or small. It’s interesting to see what people have said and imagine the cast.
Scream Fans Debate If Scream 7 Needs A Large Or Small Cast
Several fans think Scream 7 should have a bigger cast than the other movies. Redditor @Ok_Bee_1102 wrote:
“I personally feel like the
Scream 7
cast should be the biggest… We need a big enough cast so that they can 1. be killed off and it’ll substitute for not killing the core four. 2. the ghostfaces won’t be so obvious. I’m also not against one of the core four becoming ghostface (if they’re not willing to have a bigger cast).”
When a big cast is announced for a horror movie like Scream, it definitely creates a lot of anticipation since fans immediately wonder who will survive and who won’t. As the fan pointed out, it’s a good idea to ensure that Ghostface’s reveal at the end of the movie is as shocking as possible. This can only be achieved with a fairly big cast because otherwise, fans will be able to guess. There also need to be a few people who are close to Sidney so they can be red herrings. That’s the best way to create tension amid all the laughs and meta horror talk, which is a key part of the Scream formula.
While Scream 7 needs to mention Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera’s exits and the Core Four won’t be in Scream 7, it’s still interesting to think about how big or small the sequel’s cast could be. One Redditor wrote that Anika Kayoko‘s Scream 6 (Devyn Nekoda) character can be a road map for new characters. The fan wrote, “They need to study what they did right with Anika and bring that to the next film. How fluid her lines were and the chemistry was there with characters outside of Mindy as well, with short amount of screen time Anika has one of the biggest impacts of Characters I’ve ever seen talk about amongst fans, besides the OG Casey Becker.”
Redditor @ethan6581 thinks Scream 7 should have a smaller cast because Scream 6 had too many characters. Before the movie was released, it was definitely fair to be concerned that Scream 6 had a huge cast. The fan wrote:
“I hope they scale it down a bit for
Scream 7
. I felt like 6 already has way too many characters and most of them besides the returning characters didn’t really get much development or had any real purpose because there wasn’t enough time to flesh any of them out.”
If Scream 7 is about Sidney Prescott and hopefully includes fan-favorite Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) along with a few new and returning characters, that could satisfy many fans. It’s a fair point that if there is a big cast, some characters might be underwritten, which is frustrating to watch. Scream 7 can maintain the strong, funny, and sometimes a little bit creepy tone of the franchise by making sure that there aren’t too many people to keep track of. As fans have pointed out, there’s a fine balance between wondering who Ghostface could be and new characters being introduced just to be Ghostface’s victims.
Another fan would love to see three characters be part of Scream 7‘s cast:
“Rebooted OG trio – Sidney, Gale, Kirby. They get my vote!”
Who Is Coming Back For Scream 7?
In March 2024, Neve Campbell shared she would play Sidney Prescott in Scream 7. This was one of two big updates for Scream 7, the second being that Kevin Williamson would direct the horror sequel. As of mid-May 2024, there are no other casting details for the movie.
Fans expect Courteney Cox to play Gale Weathers again as she starred in all previous six Scream movies. In March 2024, Variety reported that Cox was “in talks” to reprise her role.
While the Ghostface killers in Scream 6 killed many new characters, a few could still come back for Scream 7. Fans are waiting to hear if Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy-Brown will return to play twins Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin. There is also a discussion about whether Hayden Panettiere will come back to play tough Kirby Reed again. Whether the cast of Scream 7 is big or small, fans hope to see at least a few familiar faces battle the new Ghostface.
