An X-Men character is rumored to appear in an upcoming Marvel Studios series, and they may be worthy of wielding Thor’s hammer (Mjolnir) when they do.
With X-Men ’97 just days away from premiering on Disney Plus, fans are excited to see how Marvel Studios handles the mutant team now that the rights to the characters are no longer under Fox. However, X-Men ’97 is not currently considered a part of the MCU, with series creator Beau DeMayo confirming the series was ‘its own thing.’ Fortunately, Storm is rumored to make a proper MCU appearance soon, and she could join Thor and Captain America as one of the few capable of holding Thor’s hammer.
CanWeGetSomeToast has posted an update on their recent claim that the X-Men character Storm will appear in What If season 3. According to the scooper (who has a solid success rate), Storm will be worthy of wielding Thor’s hammer in What If? season 3, though the circumstances under which this event unfolds were not divulged. Of course, while Storm would technically join Thor, Captain America, and Vision as one of the few characters capable of holding Mjolnir in the MCU, it remains to be seen if Storm’s alleged What If season 3 episode is set in the MCU proper or one of the many corners of the multiverse.
As most fans know, Thor’s hammer is enchanted with several abilities, most notably flight and storm manipulation. By spinning the hammer and tossing it with force, the wielder can grab onto the straps and fly through the air at great speeds, and while Thor is capable of using lighting without the hammer, Captain America demonstrated that he could use the weapon to summon lightning in Avengers: Endgame. This makes Storm an interesting choice to wield Thor’s hammer, as weather manipulation and flight are already two of her most notable powers. So, it will be interesting to see an even more powerful Storm and how she comes to possess Mjolnir in the first place, assuming the rumors of her What If season 3 appearance are true.
Of course, with X-Men ’97 being its ‘own thing’ and What If largely telling stories in alternate universes, fans are waiting for a proper MCU project with mutants. Ms. Marvel teased the X-Men by revealing Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan was a mutant, Patrick Stewart starred in Doctor Strange 2 as a multiverse version of Professor X, and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast appeared in The Marvels‘ post-credits scene, but a standalone X-Men project set in the MCU is only in development and not likely to hit screens anytime soon.
So, fans must be patient, but at least X-Men ’97 can tide them over. The X-Men have a rocky history on screen, with varying degrees of success through the decades. The highs include the first two X-Men films, X-Men: First Class, and Deadpool, while the lows include X3, Dark Phoenix, and New Mutants. So, perhaps Marvel Studios should be taking time to differentiate itself from past X-Men films and deliver a project worthy of the long-wait.
X-Men ’97 premieres on Disney Plus on March 20, 2024.
