Neve Campbell is officially returning as Sidney Prescott in Scream 7, but there has been no confirmation as yet if Courteney Cox will be reprising the role of Gale Weathers in Kevin Williamson’s upcoming sequel. Cox has appeared in every Scream movie thus far, so it is likely she will return as the pushy journalist. Fans are also speculating about what could happen to Gale in the new movie, with the possibility of Ghostface specifically targeting her.
Gale Weathers has had a slew of stand-offs with Ghostface in all six movies, but the killer’s motive has never been fully directed at her, with Sidney Prescott and Sam Carpenter being the main targets. However, Gale has done certain things that make her a possible target for Scream 7‘s iteration of Ghostface. After all, Gale wrote many books based on the Ghostface murders, and made money from other people’s misfortune.
What did Gale Weathers do in each Scream movie?
Scream
Gale Weathers is an opportunistic tabloid journalist, and during the events of Scream, she is out to land the top story when a killer is on the loose in Woodsboro, California. Gale has already written a book about Maureen Prescott’s murder in the same sleepy town one year earlier, which is set to be released soon.
She plays a pivotal role in bringing down one of the Ghostface killers, Billy Loomis, at Stu’s house in Scene 118, and immediately gets in front of the camera to report on the events, landing her the big scoop.
Scream 2
Gale hasn’t changed much at the beginning of Scream 2, as she tries to re-unite wrongly convicted man, Cotton Weary, with Sidney Prescott for an impromptu interview. Her career has gone from strength to strength after she sold the movie rights to her book, The Woodsboro Murders, which has been adapted into the newly released horror movie, Stab.
Gale is still after the scoop when the murders start up again, but her priorities are put to the test when Dewey Riley is found alive after a brutal stabbing. Gale chooses to turn her back on the latest scoop to be with Dewey as he’s rushed to the hospital.
Scream 3
Gale Weather’s plot point in Scream 3 sees her back to her old tricks, as she continues to chase her elusive Pulitzer prize. She is more than happy to step on anyone who gets in her way, to get the latest scoop on the latest Ghostface murders, when Cotton Weary is found murdered, with the motive linked to Maureen Prescott’s past.
Scream 4
Gale has writer’s block in a Scream 4 plot point, after she authored a string of successful books that cashed in on the Ghostface murders. However, Gale is thrust back into action when a new Ghostface begins killing the residents of Woodsboro, California.
Despite still not being the main target of Ghostface, her journalistic skills land her in the killer’s crossfire, as he stalks the party goers at the annual Stab-A-Thon in a deserted barn. She survives within an inch of her life, and is armed with yet more subject matter for potential new books.
Scream (2022)
Gale put her career first in the events leading up to Scream (2022), after moving to New York City to be the host of a morning show. Her husband, Dewey, followed her to the Big Apple, but things didn’t work out, and he relocated to Woodsboro.
Gale has gone through significant changes between Scream 4 and Scream (2022), which is evident when she turns up in Woodsboro, when the murders start up again. She is more interested in checking in on Dewey, rather than chasing the latest scoop. At the end of the movie, she even vows not to write about the Ghostface killings, so the killers will die in anonymity.
Scream 6
So much for not writing a book about the most recent Woodsboro Murders: Gale Weathers has done exactly that in Scream 6. Once again, Gale couldn’t resist cashing in on a murder spree, but this time, Hollywood hasn’t come calling to buy the rights to her latest literary offering.
Tara scolds Gale by suggesting she is nothing without the Ghostface murders, and maybe she has a point. Gale insists true-crime documentaries are all people are bothered about these days, before she faces the biggest fight of her life, when Ghostface attacks her in her swanky apartment, nearly killing her.
Ghostface’s motive could be linked to Gale in Scream 7
Gale Weathers is alive and well in the Scream-verse, with Courteney Cox heavily rumored to play the iconic character once again in Scream 7. She has had an eventful past after being caught in the crosshairs of every Ghostface murder spree to date in Scream 1-6. However, it hasn’t been all bad for Gale, as she’s capitalized on the trauma she has undoubtedly suffered over the years, with the countless books she’s written about the murders.
Nobody knows what Ghostface’s motive will be in Scream 7, but it might be time for the next iteration of Ghostface to directly target Gale Weathers, with her propensity to cash in on people’s misfortune being a plausible motive. Of course, Gale is a heroic character in the Scream-verse, after being involved in thwarting six separate killing sprees, but she’s also made sure to advance her career from it and subsequently get rich from doing so.
Ghostface hasn’t personally targeted Gale in the Scream movies, but she always gets caught up in the violence because she inserts herself into each investigation. At least one of Scream 7‘s Ghostface killers (if there are more than one) should actively seek Gale out as his/her main target, as a result of the killer’s connection to someone she’s wronged on her way to success.
