Dragon Ball: How The Series Missed A Big Opportunity With Universe 11

Highlights

  • The Tournament of Power arc was a major turning point for Dragon Ball Super, introducing powerful characters like Jiren and showcasing intense battles.
  • Jiren’s tragic backstory adds depth to his character and sets up potential storylines for Universe 11 in future Dragon Ball Super arcs.
  • Fans can look forward to possible rematches between key characters like Goku, Vegeta, Jiren, and Toppo, exploring their growth and power levels.

The Tournament of Power arc was the culmination of the first season of Dragon Ball Super. After unlocking new transformations and reaching the level of the Gods, the heroes went up against some of the strongest villains in the history of the franchise in this tournament, which included many powerful characters who were far stronger than any other opponents that the Z-Fighters had ever faced before.

However, no other opponents proved to be as much of a challenge as those of Universe 11. Goku and friends had their toughest fights against the power of Jiren and his team, but still ended up winning the tournament and saving their universe. However, instead of moving on to the Broly arc and staying in Universe 7, let’s see how Dragon Ball could have implemented Universe 11 in fantastic ways!

Story Arc

Tournament of Power Arc

During the battle between Goku and Jiren, the strongest of Universe 11’s backstory was shown, and the reason behind Jiren’s terrifying power was finally revealed. Long ago, Jiren lived a peaceful life with his parents until one day, someone known only as ‘an evildoer’ came and destroyed his entire village, leading him to run away. Eventually, he came under the tutelage of a kind martial arts teacher.

After spending the next few years training to become stronger, the same evildoer resurfaced, killing Jiren’s new master when he did so. Though he trained to get far stronger than before, he was still unable to save his master from the terrifying power of this villain, which made him devote his entire life to the pursuit of getting stronger. However, as immensely powerful as Jiren became, he never came across this villain again.

If I don’t win, then all my effort, all I’ve struggled to achieve, all of it will have been pointless! I’ll lose everything, just like I did before… and I absolutely refuse to go through that again! I cannot! I will not!

This sounds like the perfect set-up for the next Dragon Ball Super arc, where the heroes have to travel to Universe 11 to help the Pride Troopers finally confront this monster. The way the villain has been built up hints at him being exceptionally powerful and incredibly elusive, but also one that will inevitably be seen once more. So much so that Universe 11 would need the help of Universe 7 to finally face him.

This also gives an opportunity to see what characters from other universes have been up to since the Tournament of Power ended. Fans have been particularly interested in Jiren’s growth since the tournament, due to his strength and control over his energy making him the only mortal in the entire multiverse, except for Goku, to have the capabilities of achieving Ultra Instinct!

Other Possibilities in Universe 11:

There are quite a few other ways that Universe 11 can be reintroduced to the story. One of these could relate to Toppo and his new role as the God of Destruction for his universe. Although there isn’t much to add to an arc with this aspect, it would greatly add to the world-building of the series to see how the responsibilities of a Destroyer God are supposed to be carried out, since someone as responsible as Toppo would actually give it his all in his new position.

Although Beerus is pretty much the most powerful Destroyer God of them all, he isn’t very good at his job, choosing to spend his time sleeping and eating rather than performing his duties. During the Tournament of Power, Toppo finally made his choice to take up Belmod’s position as the God of Destruction, so to see him in this role would be a great aspect of the story.

More than just this, seeing Universe 11 once more offers the perfect opportunity to see a rematch between the main combatants of each universe! With Goku having perfected his Ultra Instinct and Vegeta possessing the power of a Destroyer God with his Ultra Ego, a potential rematch between Jiren and Toppo respectively would be the answer to the wishes of many fans!

As stated previously, Jiren is the perfect candidate after Goku to be the next mortal to achieve Ultra Instinct due to his power, Ki control, and composure. Seeing how Toppo has gotten the power of a Destroyer God, he is already the perfect mirror to Vegeta, who has done the same in his universe, so a rematch between all these characters would just be the perfect next step to seeing the current standing of power in the Dragon Ball multiverse!

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
