Inspired by Koyoharu Gotouge’s popular Japanese manga series of the same name, Demon Slayer is a dark fantasy series that recounts a story of vengeance, identity, love, and overcoming challenges. The show focuses on a seemingly endless demon-human struggle that has shaped society from the shadows.

At the frontlines, humanity has been protected because of the selfless pushback from the Hashiras, who put their lives on the line for the greater good. These warriors not only fought against the most powerful demons in existence, but also frequently trained the future generation of fighters as well. While some lost their lives defeating the Demon King, a few managed to survive the final war and lived to tell the tale.

Tengen Uzui may not have been a gifted swordsman like his peers, but by putting his heart and soul into improving himself as a warrior, he eventually managed to become a Hashira. Perhaps the most challenging mission he ever undertook was when he visited the Entertainment District for an investigation along with Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke.

Tengen ended up fighting Upper-Rank Five Gyutaro and his sister, Daki. With Tanjiro and his friends’ assistance, the Sound Hashira wound up emerging victorious, but he lost his left arm and one eye in the battle, which forced him to retire. He was one of the few Hashiras who survived after the death of the Demon King.

With his inspiring aura the Flame Hashira ignited a fire and instilled indefatigable determination in his comrades. When Tanjiro and his friends got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with Rengoku in the Infinity Castle arc, his dedication and selfless acts left a lasting impression on the young combatants.

Sadly, Kyojuro ended up crossing paths with Upper-Rank Three Akaza while he was without assistance from another Hashira, which turned deadly for him. The Flame Hashira fought until his last breath, and ensured that Tanjiro and the others were safe. His sacrifice was a testament to his dedication to upholding the principles and values set forth by the Demon Slayer Corps.

6 Sanemi Shinazugawa

Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa played a crucial role in defeating the Upper-Rank One Kokushibo in Infinity Castle. He even helped his comrades kill Muzan Kibutsuji despite getting heavily injured in the previous battle.

The two back-to-back fights pushed him to his limits, and he was on the verge of passing on to the afterlife when his father’s spirit forced him back to the world of living. Since he was in his early twenties and had awakened his Demon Slayer Mark, Sanemi probably lived a short life after defeating the Muzan King, but at least he got to live it at all.

5 Giyu Tomioka

The Only Hashira (Apart From Sanemi) Who Fought Muzan And Lived To Tell The Tale

During the Hashira training, Giyu struggled with self-doubt, and was unsure if he was as good as other Hashiras. This painful introspection only ended after Tanjiro had a conversation with him. Tomioka not only gained his confidence back, but then faced Akaza in the Infinity Castle. After helping Tanjiro defeat the Upper Rank 3, the Water Hashira fought the Demon King with his comrades.

After Muzan’s death, the last Hashira meeting was organized at the Ubuyashiki estate and only Sanemi accompanied him there, since all his other friends had passed away fighting against the Demon King. Since the dark era of demons had finally come to an end, the Demon Slayer Corps was officially disbanded. But since he had awakened his Mark, Tomioka would have eventually died on his 25th birthday anyway.

4 Shinobu Kocho

Eaten Alive By Doma

Shinobu vowed to join the Demon Slayer Corps, along with her sister Kanae, after a tragic incident in the past. After Kanae was killed by Upper-Rank 2 Doma, she made it her lifelong mission to avenge her death. Just before the Demon Slayer invaded the Infinity Castle, Shinobu consumed Wisteria poison.

Kocho eventually confronted Doma and fought valiantly against him. But the Upper-Rank Two easily defeated her, after which he consumed her body. The Wisteria poison worked just as Shinobu had planned, and due to Inosuke and Kanao’s brave actions, Doma was eventually killed. In the end, Shinobu was reunited with Kanao in the afterlife, while Muzan’s reign of terror came to an end soon afterward.

Mitsuri and Obanai have always had a soft spot for each other since the day they met at the Ubuyashiki Estate. They eventually became two of the most formidable combatants in the Demon Slayer Corps. It’s no surprise that the inseparable duo fought Muzan side-by-side and contributed immensely towards the victory against the Demon King.

Unfortunately, the injuries they sustained in the process were too severe, and they lost their lives soon afterward. In their last moments, Mitsuri and Obanai confessed their feelings to each other before dying in each other’s arms.

2 Muichiro Tokito

Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito achieved mastery despite his young age and succeeded in becoming a vital member of the Demon Slayer Corps through relentless hard work. His success as a Hashira was driven by the desire to eradicate demons following a tragic incident from his past in which he lost his twin brother. It is Muichiro’s frightening determination that enabled him to fight toe-to-toe against the most dangerous members of the Twelve Kizuki.

Tokito not only single-handedly killed Upper-Rank Five Gyokko, but also fought valiantly against Kokushibo in the Infinity Castle arc. Unfortunately, that battle turned out to be a violent and tragic experience for the young Hashira, who lost his arm and legs while fighting. Despite those severe injuries, he supported his comrades selflessly and helped them kill the Upper-Rank One. Sadly, Muichiro did not survive the battle, and lost his life soon after Kokushibo’s death. The Mist Hashira eventually reunited with his twin brother Yuichiro in the afterlife. Their heart-to-heart talk was emotional as they settled their differences before reuniting with their parents as well.

1 Gyomei Himejima

The Stone Hashira Remained Kind Even In His Last Moments

Gyomei Himejima, like his peers, overcame harrowing personal adversities to join the Demon Slayer Corps and become a Hashira. Arguably the strongest warrior in the organization, the gentle giant has always had a soft spot for children. Before becoming a Demon Slayer, he used to look after orphans selflessly until everything was taken away from him. Gyomei went on to fight several dangerous demons in his career, but his most challenging mission turned out to be his last.

The Stone Hashira fought bravely in the Infinity Castle arc. Along with Muichiro, Sanemi, and Genya, he defeated Upper-Rank One Kokushibo. Despite his severe injuries, he then fought Muzan with his peers and died in the battle. Even in his last moments, he remained kind and generous, urging the medics to not waste medication on him and instead tend to younger fighters. In the afterlife, Gyomei eventually meets the children he was raising and learns that they have been grateful for everything he did for them.
