My Hero Academia: Why the Deku vs Class 1-A Debate Isn’t Important

Viewers’ reactions have been mixed following the conclusion of the battle between Deku and Class 1-A in My Hero Academia. Some have argued about which side would win if they fought seriously. Others believe Deku should have avoided his classmates and continued his vigilante crusade. Finally, neither of these arguments focused on the point of what was going on with the characters.

Deku’s confrontation with Class 1-A, as exciting as it was, was not a battle of strength, as neither side intended to harm the other. Instead, it was a clash of ideals in which the loser was forced to accept what the winner was attempting to convey. More importantly, Class 1-A needed to win this battle in order to save Deku from himself.

Why did Deku Have to be Rescued?

Deku’s main issue throughout all of this was believing he had to face Shigaraki and All For One alone. He saw his classmates as friends who couldn’t fend for themselves, not as allies who could help him. They’d all die in vain if they tried to join the fight. As a result, instead of believing they could assist him, he assumed they would require his protection.

Deku’s idea that he needs to do all the protecting was reinforced after what happened to Lady Nagant. All For One used her as a pawn to fight Deku, and when she was of no further use, she was disposed of, almost for good. Deku was certain that if anyone else helped him, they’d meet with a similarly grim fate. He ended up refusing everyone’s help, including All Might’s.

This mindset is what’s led to Deku’s current state. His outfit is in tatters, he’s not eating anything, and he’s worn down both physically and mentally. Despite all this, he still insists that he’s fine because he doesn’t know how to put his own needs in front of others; he considered himself expendable. He was going to keep his friends safe even if it killed him, and it was just as hypocritical as it sounds.

When Deku’s mask falls off during his fight with Class 1-A, everything about his true state becomes clear. The audience sees the terrified little boy carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. He’s been given a lot of responsibility, and despite what he says, he doesn’t know how to handle it all – and it’s destroying him.

What Did Class 1-A Need to Do to Save Deku?

Class 1-A handled the situation correctly. They saw everything wrong with Deku’s crusade and sought to put an end to it, even if it meant using force. However, it wasn’t as simple as one side defeating the other. Deku’s goal was to keep them safe by getting away from Class 1-A. His classmates needed to stop him, but simply capturing him would not suffice.

Deku’s main concern was that he had to protect his friends from All For One. Thus, Clas 1-A needed to prove that they not only didn’t need protection but that they were strong enough to help him fight this great evil. Therefore, stopping Deku would require showing him that they weren’t the weaklings he made them out to be in his mind.

They completed their mission when they caught up to Deku as he was fleeing. Even if it was only for a split second, they demonstrated that they had what it took to keep up with him; this was proof that he’d been underestimating them. This is what eventually sapped his will to resist.

By confronting Deku like this, Class 1-A could finally get across everything they’d been trying to tell him. He didn’t have to fight All For One by himself. The rest of his class had both the strength and the determination to help him bear the burden he’d been shouldering. As long as they all worked together, they could overcome any challenge thrown their way.
