Marvel fans have been trying their best to guess Giancarlo Esposito’s role in the anticipated superhero flick Captain America: Brave New World. However, according to the actor, none of the guesses were right.
Esposito is among the new names attached to Captain America: Brave New World starring Anthony Mackie, the first movie without the original Captain America star Chris Evans. However, the production has been keen on keeping his role a top secret and even listed it as “undisclosed” on the call sheets. The move only sparked various speculations about his character. Some fans claimed that they had already figured out his role, with one saying he had to play the character of Bushman, and another suggested he could be playing the leader of the criminal organization LAF. However, the Breaking Bad actor seemingly encouraged Marvel fans to make new suggestions because, according to him, none of them had guessed it accurately.
The Better Call Saul star attended the Fanboy Expo in Knoxville over the weekend, where he spoke about his mysterious character in Captain America. He teases that his character is a “badass,” and he is excited to portray it on the big screen without revealing too much about his role’s identity. He also shared his filming experience on set and addressed the theories about his character saying that none were correct so far. He said, “The character I’m playing is a badass. That always excites me. For me to develop that character in line with the character’s inception is a fascinating art for me. I had an incredible time shooting it. I’m not telling you who I’m playing… People are trying to guess and no one has guessed correctly yet.”
Esposito has been typecast as among the best villains in Hollywood after portraying Gus Fring on Breaking Bad. In a previous interview with Deadline, he teased that fans would be surprised by his Marvel debut because it would be another level of “badass” from what they had already seen in him. However, he doubled down on his stand on not giving clues or revealing his character in the film. He said, “You haven’t seen me use my body in a way that I’ll be using it. The MCU’s exciting; I can’t tell you who I’m playing, but you’re going to be excited when you see.”
Marvel had already dropped the first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World and several scenes featured Esposito. There are rumors that he is playing George Washington “G.W.” Bridge, a character that Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld co-created with Fabian Nicieza for inclusion in their X-Force series in 1991 after the latter reacted to Esposito’s photo from the trailer on X, formerly Twitter, saying it was “Cool.” However, that, too, remains pure speculation. Previous reports claimed that Esposito is playing a “villainous role.” When he appeared at the CCXP Mexico he teased that his character is “original, and new, and fresh.” This could mean he is playing a villain who hasn’t appeared in any Marvel movies yet. There are numerous villains in the comic books, and tons of them that Esposito could perfectly execute, making it even harder to guess who among them he is portraying in the upcoming movie. So fans will have to wait for more clues to correctly figure out Esposito’s mysterious character in Brave New World.
Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14, 2025.
