House Of The Dragon: 7 Underutilized Characters

Highlights

  • Joffrey Velaryon, a Targaryen prince, is underutilized and deserves more screen time.
  • Daeron Targaryen and Helaena Targaryen, children of King Viserys and Alicent, are underutilized and could have more significant roles.
  • The dragons, core to House Targaryen, are underutilized and have only appeared briefly in the series.

House of the Dragon has seen the introduction of quite a lot of intriguing characters over the years. Fans have seen quite a few houses introduce some very intriguing characters in the story, and at the same time, the prominent ones display some of the most legendary characters that fans had heard about in the original Game of Thrones series.

Of course, there are many important characters in House of the Dragon, such as Queen Rhaenyra, the Usurper Aegon, and many others, that are at the core of this show. However, there are also other characters who, despite having very exciting storylines, have largely been sidelined and are thus underutilized.

7 Joffrey Velaryon

Son of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen

Joffrey Velaryon is a character that fans have not seen much of in House of the Dragon. Joffrey is the youngest of Rhaenyra’s children from her first marriage with Laenor Velaryon. Of course, in reality, these children were fathered by Sir Harwin Strong. Regardless, each one of them is no less Targaryen than anyone else. These are true princes who hold themselves to very high standards.

While fans certainly have seen some of Lucerys and Jaecerys Velaryon, Joffrey is a character that fans haven’t seen much of at all. This is a character that is criminally underrated, and, at the same time, deserves some screen time down the line. With Lucerys’s death, fans can only hope that Joffrey gets more attention.

6 Daeron Targaryen

The Youngest Child Of King Viserys And Alicent

Daeron Targaryen is yet another prince of House Targaryen. He is a child of King Viserys Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. Fans have seen quite a lot of Alicent’s children. Of course, King Aegon rules the Seven Kingdoms right now, whereas Helaena is his Queen.

Meanwhile, Aemond is one of the strongest men in the realm right now, possessing the largest dragon. This leaves behind Daeron, who hasn’t had much attention thrown at him at all. Daeron is currently in Old Town, and with Otto Hightower heading there, fans can only hope that he gets some attention as well.

5 Helaena Targaryen

The Dreamer Child Of Alicent

Helaena Targaryen is a very intriguing character that fans have seen quite a bit of in House of the Dragon. Just like Daeron, Helaena is a child of King Viserys and Alicent. While she certainly royalty, fans know that it isn’t her status as Queen that makes her interesting. In fact, it is her being a dreamer.

Helaena has dragon dreams and fans have seen quite a lot of them over the few episodes of House of the Dragon so far. However, Helaena is also very underutilized in the sense that her dragon dreams never really do anything. She simply dreams them and lets things happen. Helaena’s prophecies don’t affect the plot in any way other than giving cheap foreshadowing to the fans. Were Helaena to act on her prophecies or were it to change the story in some way or affect it, then, she would be utilized properly.

4 Laena Velaryon

The Daughter of Rhaenys And Corlys

Laena Velaryon is a character fans saw quite early in House of the Dragon. After the death of Aemma Arryn, Laena was proposed by Corlys and Rhaenys as a match for King Viserys. Later on, she ended up marrying none other than Daemon Targaryen. Laena was certainly underutilized, in the sense that fans never actually got to see her do anything significant.

She was fascinated by Vhagar, however, the scene where she claimed the dragon for herself was cut from the first season of the show. Then, Laena was seen pregnant and her role was limited to that of a mother for an episode, and then she was killed off. Laena had a lot of potential, both in terms of being Daemon’s partner, the mother of Rhaena and Baela, and at the same time, a fierce dragon rider.

3 Baela Targaryen

Daughter Of Daemon And Laena Velaryon

Baela Targaryen is Daemon and Laena’s daughter and a very intriguing character that fans are going to see quite a lot later down the line in House of Dragon. For now, however, she remains underutilized.

Baela simply played a small role in the first season of House of the Dragon, which was largely insignificant. Right now, she is by Rhaenyra’s side, and, hopefully, will aid her in the war to come greatly. Baela and Moondancer haven’t done anything worth noticing.

2 Rhaena Targaryen

Daughter Of Daemon And Laena Velaryon

Just like Baela, Rhaena Targaryen is yet another character who fans would love to see more of in the series. Rhaena has a lot of potential and it is unfortunate that she hasn’t received much attention.

In Pentos, the story did focus on her for a short amount of time, before she ended up becoming rather insignificant again. However, the character is incredibly rich and if the writers do focus on her, there is a brilliant story around her to be written.

1 The Dragons

The Core Of House Targaryen

Of course, the most underutilized creatures in House of the Dragon are the dragons themselves. Fans have not seen many dragons in House of the Dragon just yet. So far, fans have only seen a proper display of the likes of Caraxes, Syrax, Seasmoke, and Vhagar. All the others have only appeared in very short scenes.

Meleys has made her appearance properly in one episode, while Sunfyre, Moondancer, Tyraxes, Tessarion, and all the others have not yet appeared. Fans would have certainly loved to see more of these dragons in the first season, and of course, in the second season as well. But, these dragons have not really made their mark just yet.
