RUMOR: One MCU Character Could Make An Unexpected Big Screen Return

Highlights

  • Marvel fans might see Wanda Maximoff sooner than expected, with rumors of a new project featuring Scarlet Witch in the works.
  • Despite the character’s supposed end in Doctor Strange sequel, teasers hint at her return with a new director being sought for a Scarlet Witch project.
  • The MCU may not be done with Scarlet Witch, paving the way for potential future storylines and a fresh look at the character’s arc.

After the success of Wandavision and her tragic role in the sequel film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be seeing Wanda Maximoff again sooner than they could have hoped according to a new rumor.

The sequel to the first Doctor Strange film featured an interesting twist as it put fan-favorite character Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch as a villain fresh off her run as the protagonist of her own Disney+ series, Wandavision. The plot of the film ends with a redeemed Wanda sacrificing herself in a powerful moment that would be the last fans would ever see of her again if comic book characters weren’t infamous for not staying down, especially if there’s no confirmation after the alleged death scene. This was all but confirmed when an MCU producer teased the character still being in the franchise’s future, and the mountain of speculation started to collect.

Fans have been eager for concrete news concerning plans for the character, even more so after Kevin Feige teased her continued involvement in the MCU, and a new rumor might have provided just that. As reported by the account MyTimeToShineHello on X, Marvel Studios is currently in the process of searching for a director to helm a new Scarlet Witch project at the studio. While no other details are circulating at this time, there are quite a few things that are usually in place before a director is brought on board for a project like this, most notably a script. This rumor comes at the same time that the unreleased Agatha All Along trailer reportedly confirmed Wanda’s death once and for all. Though these reports obviously conflict with one another, the MCU has not been shy about throwing out some subterfuge to keep fans on their toes.

Wanda would not the only Doctor Strange star returning to the MCU soon, as the film was one of the last triumphs for the company before the slump from supposed superhero fatigue started to drag things down. While there’s a lot of anticipation for this project, it is fair to note that it’s not quite as in demand as it could be. It could potentially be helped along by the upcoming Agatha All Along series on DIsney+, which will air uncontested by other MCU projects at the tail end of the year and could potentially reignite interest in the Scarlet Witch again. However, that’s an optimistic look at things, as Agatha All Along has it’s own issues to deal with stemming from the studio waiting too long to pull the trigger. With Disney committing to a quality over quantity campaign in recent times, there’s a possibility that the oversaturation clearing up makes fan interest stay up.

It’s still up in the air whether or not Marvel Studios can still avoid repeating its Black Widow mistake with Scarlet Witch, but if the rumor pans out then this could be a sign that things are progressing in the right direction. Fans will have to wait and see if this turns out to be true and what this decision means for the future of the character.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
