Highlights
- Saiyans were almost wiped out by Frieza, explaining why survivors are memorable characters.
- Bardock’s group includes forgotten Saiyan warriors like Borgos and Fasha.
- Some Saiyans, like Beets and Leek, defy archetypes by being cowardly or laid-back, unlike typical battle-hungry Saiyan.
Saiyans in Dragon Ball are arguably the toughest race in the entire universe. With the advent of Dragon Ball Super, an argument can be made that this race is the most fearsome of the lot in the multiverse, too. Reaching new heights of power over and over again, it’s easy to see why these Saiyans end up being a memorable part of whatever story they’re thrust into.
This race was almost obliterated by Frieza, making it easy to see why the survivors are so memorable. However, there was a time when Saiyans ran amok across multiple planets, obliterating millions under Frieza’s reign of tyranny. When the past of the Saiyans was explored, a lot of characters were forgotten due to their brief appearances, even those who were part of this fearsome race.
6 Borgos
A Forgotten Member Of Team Bardock
- First Appearance: Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku
The exploration of Bardock’s history made for a fascinating time, with viewers getting to understand what made Goku’s father tick. It should be no surprise that this Saiyan was as bloodthirsty as they come, annihilating innocents without a care in the world.
The Saiyan operated with a group of strong warriors, with one of them being a warrior named Borgos. Surprisingly enough, even with his lack of hair, he still can’t hold the distinguished honor of being the most popular bald Saiyan in the series.
5 Fasha
The Only Female Member Of Bardock’s Group
- First Appearance: Dragon Ball Minus: Departure of the Fated Child
There’s a shocking lack of powerful female Saiyans in Universe 7, with Dragon Ball Super finally introducing two powerful female Saiyans who pushed both Goku and Vegeta to their limits. During Bardock’s OVA, there’s another female Saiyan shown in the group by the name of Fasha.
An interesting fact that a lot of people aren’t aware of is that after Gine, a Saiyan best known for being Bardock’s wife and Goku’s mother, retired, she was the last remaining Saiyan in Bardock’s group. She, like the other members of Bardock’s group, is taken out by Dodoria under Frieza’s orders so that the threat of the Saiyans doesn’t end up overtaking his strength.
4 Beets
A Saiyan Who Is Cowardly, Which Is Pretty Unnatural For A Member Of His Race
- First Appearance: Dragon Ball Heroes
Most people assume that Saiyans are as powerful as can be and never run away from a fight, a fact that Vegeta attests to time and time again. While this is true to an extent, the fact is that some outliers to this rule are bound to exist.
Such is the case with Beets, a hilariously named Saiyan who certainly doesn’t look like a battle-hungry Saiyan in any way. This is shown in his personality, too, given how he actively avoids confrontation and is shown to be cowardly more often than not. First appearing in the Dragon Ball Heroes game in 2010, many fans have since forgotten about his existence.
3 Leek
A Saiyan With A Rather Laid-Back Personality
- First Appearance: Dragon Ball Minus: Departure of the Fated Child
Dragon Ball Super: Broly introduced fans to a wealth of new Saiyans whom they’d never seen before. Of course, these fleeting appearances meant that the vast majority of them weren’t going to make such a major impact, and Leek is a great example of the same.
In the brief screen time that he gets, Leek gets to display just how laidback and relaxed he is. Unfortunately, instead of living the rest of his life in relative peace, he is obliterated by Frieza along with the rest of the Saiyans in a brutal display of power. He made his debut in the Dragon Ball Minus manga, but he did very little to stick with fans.
2 Moroko
A Saiyan Scientist Who Identified Broly’s Potential
- First Appearance: Dragon Ball Super: Broly
Given the penchant for Saiyans to focus solely on battles and nothing else (something that Goku has been so kind to show time and time again), it’s hard to believe that some members of this race actually focused on developing their brains instead of brawn. So, the idea of a Saiyan working as a scientist is hard to fathom, but that’s mostly because this race is almost whittled down by the time the events of Dragon Ball kick off.
One of the scientists on Planet Vegeta is Moroko, a character who makes the briefest of appearances in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. He informs King Vegeta about Broly’s boundless potential after subjecting the infant Saiyan to some rigorous testing. Aside from being a scientist, Moroko did very little to become a memorable character.
1 Nion
A Calm-Headed Scientist Who, Along With Other Scientists, Realized Broly’s Potential As A Saiyan
- First Appearance: Dragon Ball Super: Broly
Nion is another one of the rare female Saiyans that fans want to see more of. She’s one of the more calm and collected members of the race who tests Broly’s strength and realizes that he has the potential to become a Legendary Super Saiyan.
Unfortunately, she didn’t get a lot of time to shine before Frieza obliterated the entire planet, eliminating any chance of her making more of an impact in the series. Still, that should take nothing away from the immense intelligence she showcased during the short screen time she was given in the Broly movie.
