From the title, it is quite easy to decipher what this anime is about. My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex revolves around Mizoto and Yume, two people who dated when they were in middle school. Now, as high schoolers, they are ready to start afresh, explore their options, and, quite frankly, not be in each other’s lives. However, things take a drastic and humorous turn when they end up back in each other’s lives not as romantic partners but as step-siblings. Now, they must ignore whatever feeling that might start brewing so their parents can be happy in their new marriage.

Yuuta and Saki in Days With My Stepsister started off as strangers, and although Mizoto and Yume were not exactly strangers, them breaking up meant that they were not active members of each other’s lives and would have become strangers at one point. Now, these characters have become staples in each other’s lives and are being brought together by their parents’ decision to get married.

7 Brothers Conflict

For the longest time, it has just been Ema and her father, but his decision to remarry turns her life upside down and not exactly in a bad way. Ema and her father move to live with his new wife and thirteen boys that come with Ema’s stepmother. As Ema lives with her new brothers, she becomes overwhelmed because, not only has she not lived with these many people before, but most of her brothers seem to have developed feelings for her.

As these two anime progress, the female protagonist is left with a choice of either chasing a romantic relationship with her stepbrother (or, in Ema’s case, one of her stepbrothers) or keeping things strictly platonic and familial. As they are not related by blood, developing a romantic relationship is not looked down on, but it can make things, especially their living situation, quite complicated.

6 Girlfriend, Girlfriend

Living With Two Love Interests

Naoya finds himself in a love triangle, and instead of choosing one girl to be with, he decides to date both. However, he receives points for being honest by not doing it behind their backs, informing them of the situation. Girlfriend, Girlfriend tells the story of these three as they navigate school and their non-monogamous relationship.

Things, however, start to get interesting as Naoya’s girlfriends, Saki and Nagisa, come to live with him. Naoya finds it challenging, but he does not let it sway him. This living situation is similar to that of Yuuta and Saki, as they have to live together despite their feelings for each other.

When things were not going according to plan for Koyomi and Shiori, they did what most people dream of doing but never had the chance to do, which was to run to a parallel world where everything turned out perfectly for them. Koyomi and Shiori have known each other since they were seven, and as they grew older, getting to know each other better, they began to develop romantic feelings for one another and were set on getting married.

However, the worst that could happen happened to them when their parents decided to get married, causing these two to go from lovers to step-siblings. It is just like in Days With My Stepsister where, initially, Yuuta and Saki’s parents’ decision to get married was no problem, but when they started getting closer and feelings started to develop, they had doubts.

One should never underestimate someone. This exactly what Alisa does when she assumes that Masachika, her nonchalant benchmate, does not understand Russian. Being a pretty girl comes with some benefits, but one is always being the center of attention. As someone used to attention, she is intrigued by Masachika’s nonchalant attitude and tries to get his.

As Alisa tries to get close to Masachika, she becomes frustrated because she is not making enough headway and seems to have strong feelings for him. Alisa vents out her frustrations to Masachika in Russian, thinking he does not understand, but he does. She tries to explore but cannot because of their situation, which is Masachika simply not caring. Just like Alisa, in Days With My Stepsister, Yuuta and Saki have feelings they need to come to terms with and navigate through.

Domestic Girlfriend tells the story of Natsuo Fujii, whose one-night stand takes an unexpected turn. Heartbroken by the fact that his teacher, Hina, whom he is in love with, does not share the same feelings, he goes out with his friends and meets Rui. After getting through the getting to know each other phase, Rui takes him back to her house for a night of romance.

After doing the deed, these two go back to being strangers, but this doesn’t last long as Natsuo’s father brings Rui’s mother home as the woman he wants to marry. Natsuo’s stepmother comes bearing two gifts: Rui and Hina, her daughters. Living under the roof with the woman he loves and the woman he had a one-night stand with, things are not looking great. However, this anime is similar to Days With My Stepsister because it explores the relationship between step-siblings and how it can easily turn into a forbidden love.
