Now You Can Buy a One Piece Cake – From a Vending Machine!

Highlights

  • One Piece, a popular anime and manga series, now has tasty, character-themed cakes available in Japan from Cake.jp.
  • Each cake is inspired by a character’s image colors and comes in a glass jar with special art on the outside.
  • While ten flavors can be purchased online, the other seven can only be found in special vending machines in select locations.

One of the biggest, most popular anime and manga series in the world is One Piece. Luffy and his friends have been on their anime adventure since 1999, and have no sign of stopping any time soon. In fact, this story of a band of pirates sailing the open seas and going on adventure after adventure has over 1,100 episodes now, and around the same number of chapters in its manga. One Piece is a familiar part of Japanese pop culture now, and its influence can be seen everywhere if you are looking for it.

It comes as no surprise, then, that there is certainly no shortage of One Piece merchandise in Japan. Collaborations with this famous anime happen regularly, with everything from permanent gyms to pop-up limited stores. Now, one of the newest One Piece collaborations to hit the streets of Japan is not only cute, it’s also delicious. For a limited time, there are One Piece-themed cakes for sale, and they can be purchased from special vending machines.

These new One Piece cakes have hit the streets of Japan thanks to a popular Japanese cake company called Cake.jp. Cake.jp is no stranger to making anime cakes, and has released plenty of other collaboration sweets in the past. This latest one featuring the cast of One Piece features 17 different kinds of cake. Each one is made from ingredients inspired by that character’s image colors (red for Luffy, green for Zoro, and so on). They also feature special art on the outside of the container of the character wearing the clothes from the Egghead Arc of the anime.

Ten of the seventeen cakes are available for purchase online, so they can be bought from anywhere in Japan. The flavors and their associated characters available for online purchase are:

  • Strawberry shortcake (Luffy)
  • Pistachio (Zoro)
  • Orange (Nami)
  • Lemon (Usopp)
  • Grape (Sanji)
  • Strawberry (Chopper)
  • Blueberry cheesecake (Robin)
  • Blueberry (Franky)
  • Black sesame (Brook)
  • Chocolate parfait (Jinbe)

All the cakes are layered inside glass jars with the character art on the outside, and topped with plenty of fresh cream. Depending on the flavor, there are layers of cake, fruit, chocolate, and more to enjoy. The cakes are sold frozen to keep them fresh inside their airtight jars, and can be enjoyed after they have been properly thawed.

The Most Exclusive Cakes

Of course, it would not be a special collaboration without something exclusive. While the ten flavors above can also be purchased online, the other seven flavors can only be found in special vending machines which are only at a few places in Japan. These vending machines are the only place where you can buy all the special One Piece collaboration cakes. According to SoraNews24, the vending machines can only be found in the following places:

The One Piece cake vending machines are up and running now in Tokyo at the Machida, Kokubunji, and Kichijoji branches of department store Marui, as well as Soka Marui in Saitama Prefecture, plus the Totsuka and Kashiwa branches of department store Modi in Kanagawa and Chiba Prefectures, respectively.

You will have to find one of these limited machines if you want to purchase one of the special flavors. These exclusive flavors are the grape sundae (Luffy Gear 5), strawberry shortcake (Straw Hat Pirates icon pattern), chocolate (Dr. Vegapunk and cats pattern), and a mixed trifle (Egghead arc art). There are also 3 additional trifles that are sold as mystery flavors, along with character wanted posters. The final three are sold randomly, so you won’t know what flavor you get until you open it – all you can do is select a wanted poster on the machine.

Each cake sells for 1000 yen ($6.25 USD), so they are affordable for most people who are looking for a special dessert. Plus, the glass jars with character art make for a nice keepsake even after the cake has been enjoyed. The cakes are already for sale in Japan both online and from the vending machines, so keep your eyes open if you are in Japan any time soon. So far, there is no news about when they will stop being available.
