The House Words Of House Hightower
The Great and Noble Houses form the bedrock of the monarchy in House of the Dragon. The show featured a few major Houses in season 1, and more are likely to join the fray. A few examples of the latter include Houses Rosby and Stokeworth.
The existing Houses that will play a key role in the Dance of the Dragons are Targaryen, Velaryon, Hightower, and Lannister. House Stark briefly appears in House of the Dragon‘s – Season 1 through its representative, the Lord of Winterfell, Rickon Stark; this time around, Cregan is in charge. All these Houses, whether major or minor, have certain ideals or a set of beliefs. Enshrined as House Words, here are the impressive family mottos in House of the Dragon.
The House Words Of House Stokeworth
“Proud to Be Faithful”
House Stokeworth is a minor noble House in the realm and one of the first few to submit to Aegon the Conqueror. Since it lies in the Crownlands, it falls under the direct paramountcy of the crown and not any Lord Paramount. The Stokeworth words, “Proud to Be Faithful” are fickle as the Black lord Stokeworth, breaks his oath when brought before the Greens at King’s Landing.
House Stokeworth of Stokeworth supplies men to Criston Cole’s army in the war of succession that’s the focal point of House of the Dragon – Season 2. However, when King’s Landing falls to Rhaenyra Targaryen, Lord Stokeworth loses his head in trying to swear an oath of loyalty to her. House Stokeworth’s coat of arms – a white lamb against a field of green – appears in House of the Dragon season 2 Teaser Trailer. The Dance of the Dragons looms like a shadow on the reputation of the faithful House Stokeworth of the Crownlands.
The House Words Of House Beesbury
“Beware Our Sting”
Viserys’ Master of Coin, and the distinguished nobleman, Lord Lyman Beesbury, was the representative of House Beesbury in House of the Dragonuntil Ser Criston Cole shoved him down, cracked his temple, and murdered him in cold blood. The Lord of Honeyholt was blindsided by Alicent Hightower’s claim that the King had chosen Aegon as his successor with no one but her as a witness.
Lord Lyman comes from a minor, noble House of the Reach, which is under the vassalage of the Hightowers. Though George R. R. Martin’s works say nothing about the Beesbury words, semi-semi-canon sources claim it is “Beware our Sting.” The next Lord of Honeyholt in lore, Ser Alan Beesbury, fights for Queen Rhaenyra and the Blacks in the Dance of the Dragons. Alan is captured in the Battle on the Honeywine, which marks a significant victory for the Greens.
The House Words Of House Velaryon
“The Old, the True, the Brave”
House of the Dragon – Season 2 retains major Houses, chief among them is House Velaryon. Led by the famed seafarer, Lord Corlys, the nobles are known for sailing around uncharted regions and for the treasures the Sea Snake brought back to High Tide. The lavishly decorated Great Hall of High Tide (interchangeably known as the Hall of Nine in lore) showcases many of the great treasures from the Nine Great Voyages that Corlys, as a young man, made aboard Sea Snake.
Lord Corlys is Rhaenyra’s strongest ally in House of the Dragon – Season 2. He and his House are conspicuous by their heraldic fantasy seahorse, and their words, according to semi-canon sources, are “The Old, the True, the Brave.” The Velaryons are cousins to the Targaryens and come from an ancient impressive Valyrian lineage that may be older than House Targaryen in the first place. They made settlements on Driftmark way before the Targaryens did on the nearby Dragonstone. Aegon the Conqueror’s mother was Lady Valaena Velaryon, and he made a political match between his heir, Aenys, and Lady Alyssa Velaryon. The war for the Stepstones is a testament to House Velaryon’s bravery. Without the aid of the crown, the House bled in trying to achieve control over the Stepstones.
The House Words Of House Hightower
“We Light the Way”
Though not as rich as the Velaryons, House Hightower of Oldtown is certainly among the top three in the realm. By choosing trade and commerce over wars, the Hightowers made the family prosperous. Furthermore, they are industrious people of the realm who are patrons of Westeros’ widely practiced religion – the Faith of the Seven. The House of Hightower has a Valyrian steel sword, named, Vigilance, and it will throw weight behind its kin – King Aegon II in the Dance of the Dragons.
“We Light The Way” House words must be studied in light of the Hightowers’ lighthouse seat, which is the oldest in Westeros. The opulence of the Hightower goes hand in hand with the family’s enormous wealth and an ancient heritage that gives them a sense of pride. Given the Hightowers’ religious patronage, and intellectual patronage of the order of Maesters, their words are befitting through and through.
House of the Dragon Season 2 premieres June 16 at 9/8c on HBO and Max.
