Wind Breaker is the latest delinquent anime but with a surprising twist. While the students still aim to gain the top spot within the school to showcase their strength, their respect for their leaders remains unmatched. Many students are your typical brawlers, some with a lack of manners and others with a twisted personality. However, although many are delinquents, they all come together in a brotherly fashion.
Though these students may not be your typical delinquents, when speaking or referring to their General, they have their utmost respect. Bofurin is a school that values strength over academics. While many delinquents prowl the school, they still have a heart of gold and insist on protecting the neighborhood from gang activity. But who are these Kings that guide and mentor the students?
Who are the Four Heavenly Kings?
The students are led by the Four Heavenly Kings, devas, or Kings, who follow the top dog or Primo, Hajime Umemiya. Each King or deva directly corresponds with Hajime Umemiya regarding the current status of the neighboring town or any potential threats. While Umemiya stands at the top, these Kings are strong in their own right. As a result, they serve as captains or commanding officers and are each given a class to mentor.
Additionally, each class is organized into four teams: Tamon, led by Toma Hiragi; Jikoku, led by Tsubakino Tasuku; Zocho, led by Saku Mizuki; and Komoku, led by Takumi Momose. Each team leader represents a figure in Buddism, a powerful guardian who protects the world, or in this case, the town of Makochi.
Toma Hiragi
In the anime’s first episode, we meet Toma Hiragi, who protects Sakura and Kotoha from a gang attack. Hiragi is one of the four Heavenly Kings and the Tamon Team Leader, and he is in his third year. He represents the guardian of the north. The series’ protagonist, Haruka Sakura, is one of the students on team Tamon and often spars with him to improve his fighting abilities.
Toma Hiragi could be considered one of the strongest Kings of the four and can often be seen taking stomach medicine Gaskun 10. Hiragi likely takes command of the school when Umemiya is not present, primarily due to Umemiya’s lighthearted personality. Additionally, Hiragi has the unfortunate task of conveying current conflicts to Umemiya, constantly leaving him distressed.
Tsubakino Tasuku
Tsubakino Tasuku is another third-year student and is the leader of the Jikoku team and represents the guardian of the East. While Bofurin High School is a school for boys, Tsubakino is the only one who wears a girl’s uniform and dresses femininely. While Kotoha could be seen as the gathering place for Bofurin, Tsubakino seems to take a motherly or sisterly role of the four Kings, often asking others to refer to them as “Tsubaki-chan” and is empathetic to others’ situations.
Additionally, Tsubakino is overly affectionate with many of the members of Bofurin and often shows their affection for Umemiya. Although Tsubakino dresses femininely and has a welcoming personality, equipped with high heels, he is a force to be reckoned with as he grows more powerful as the battle continues.
Saku Mizuki
Like Tsubakino and Hiragi, Saku Mizuki is a third student and the Komoku team leader. Like many glasses-wearing characters before him, Mizuki is the strategist on the team. As Nire mentions, he is a “military fanatic,” taking the leading role in guiding Bofurin in the upcoming war. Although Mizuki can hold his own during a fight, his strengths lie in his strategic planning. When up against the Noboshi, Mizuki is quickly defeated.
Takumi Momose
The final member of the four heavenly Kings is Takumi Momose, the Zocho team leader. Aside from his love of drawing and short stature, little is known about the Zocho team leader. Momose seems to be the weakest of the four Kings; however, little is known about his combat ability.
Wind Breaker is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
