Hunter x Hunter follows the story of Gon Freecss, a young boy from Whale Island, aspiring to become a hunter to find his father, Ging. Hunters are highly skilled individuals who undertake various tasks such as hunting dangerous creatures, seeking rare treasures, or pursuing criminals, with their journey often filled with perilous challenges and hidden mysteries.
Throughout the series, Gon faces mortal danger on his quest, culminating in a heartwarming reunion with his father during the Election Arc’s conclusion. Despite Gon’s focus on finding his father, little is known about his mother, though a fan theory revolving around Greed Island may offer insights.
Ging Frecess is a Hunter and Inventor of Greed Island
In Hunter x Hunter, Ging Freecss is a legendary hunter and a member of the Zodiacs, a prestigious group of hunters entrusted with various important tasks within the Hunter Association. Despite his absence from Gon’s life, Gon idolizes him and embarks on a quest to find him. Ging left Whale Island at a young age to pursue his dreams as a hunter, returning ten years later with Gon in tow. However, Gon’s upbringing falls under the care of Mito, Ging’s cousin, following the tragic passing of Gon’s grandparents. Ging’s accomplishments extend beyond hunting, as he became renowned for his contributions to archeology, using his wealth to preserve and restore ancient ruins worldwide, as well as his creation of Greed Island, a dangerous video game meant only for Hunters.
The Mysteries of the Greed Island Cards
Greed Island is an exclusive and dangerous video game created for Hunters, played on the JoyStation Console. Greed Island is rare and commands a staggering price of at least 8 billion at auctions. The game’s mechanics are extraordinary, as it transports players’ physical bodies into the virtual world of Greed Island, where they are only released upon death, victory, or departure. Accessible solely to Nen users, Greed Island was created by Ging Freecss in 1987, along with ten other talented Nen users known as Game Masters. Situated in the real world on an island to the east of Yorknew City, Greed Island’s primary objective is for players to collect a specified set of cards and fill a binder with 100 slots, each designated for particular cards. These cards, while potent within the game, lose their power outside its confines. However, there is one coveted exception: those who conquer the game are granted the privilege of taking three Specified Slot Cards beyond Greed Island’s boundaries. This is seen when Gon selects the “Blue Planet,” “Paladin’s Necklace,” and “Plot of Beach” cards after winning and before exiting the game.
Theory Involves the Pregnancy Stone Card
As previously stated, players must collect 100 cards in order to complete Greed Island. One of these 100 designated slot cards, required for a player to complete the game, is the Pregnancy Stones card, ranked S in difficulty. Numbered #007, this card allows the player to become pregnant by carrying a stone for a month, regardless of gender. The player can choose the baby’s sex using specialized stones. It is this card that is at the center of the fan theory. As Gon’s mother has never been seen or revealed, many fans believe that Ging used this card to birth Gon.
As the Creator, Ging Would Know the Ins and Out of the Game
As the creator of Greed Island, Ging is intimately familiar with the game’s mechanics, including its special cards like the Pregnancy Stones. According to a theory, Ging may have used this card to bring Gon into the world. While some argue that this is implausible because the game is younger than Gon, many fans propose a possible explanation. They suggest that, like most games, the Pregnancy Stone could have been created during development, with Gon serving as a test subject before the card was implemented into the game. Others suggest that since these cards are created using Nen, they may have existed in the real world prior to the game’s creation. As a Hunter, Ging would have had the means to discover different lands and mysteries. There is some evidence that backs this theory.
Gon Had a Ring and Binder Before Visiting Greed Island
Some fans argue that Gon’s possession of his own ring and binder, necessary for entering Greed Island, implies he might have been born as a result of the game’s mechanics rather than conventionally. They speculate that these items suggest Gon’s connection to Greed Island, indicating an unconventional origin tied to the game itself. This theory suggests that Gon’s presence in Greed Island could be indicative of his unconventional birth through the game’s mechanics.
However, there are several flaws with this theory. Firstly, in a recorded message, Ging mentions Gon’s mother, indicating she exists. However, Gon chooses not to listen to the message, leaving the possibility open for speculation. Secondly, the consequences of using the card raise questions, such as why Ging would need to be in Greed Island with Gon if he could use it outside the island. Additionally, the theory implies Gon is a Nen being, raising anatomical and genetic concerns. Gon’s condition after the Chimera Ant arc, where he loses the ability to use Nen, presents further challenges to this theory. It’s uncertain how Gon could survive if he were solely a Nen being, as he requires Nen to exist.
Other Theories
However, the Pregnancy Stone theory is not the only one concerning Gon’s parentage. Theories range from mundane explanations like a random woman impregnated by Ging, to more fantastical ideas such as Gon having ties to the Dark Continent. Another theory suggests Ging and Cheadle, a Zodiac member, could be his parents.
Ging Met a Random Woman
One theory suggests Gon’s mother is a random woman impregnated by Ging, who later returned for the baby without anyone caring about her or Gon’s origin. As Ging is a Hunter who travels around the world, this doesn’t seem too far off.
Gon’s Mother Could be a Star Rated Hunter
Indeed, another intriguing theory proposes that Gon’s mother could be a star-rated hunter. This theory suggests that Gon’s unique personality, distinct from Ging’s, might be influenced by a mother who prioritized being a hunter over maternal responsibilities. This scenario could explain Gon’s strong Nen potential, as well as his exceptional strength compared to others.
Gon May Come From the Dark Continent
While not explored in the anime, a more speculative theory suggests Gon may have origins tied to the Dark Continent, explaining his exceptional strength and massive Nen potential. While this theory seems far-fetched due to the extreme dangers of the Dark Continent, it’s supported by Gon’s encounter with Nanika, who came to possess Alluka Zoldyck under unknown circumstances and displayed immense Nen abilities while healing him. Additionally, the possibility of Gon’s relation to Don Freecs, a figure rumored to have lived in the Dark Continent for centuries, adds some validity to this theory.
Gon is the Son of Cheadle
One of the most unusual fan theories surrounding Gon’s parentage suggests that Ging and Cheadle, a member of the Zodiacs, may be his parents. Cheadle Yorkshire, also known as “Dog” within the Zodiacs, holds the position of a Triple-Star Disease Hunter and currently chairs the Hunter Association. During the Election Arc, Ging’s advice to Cheadle to be wary of Pariston has sparked speculation about their connection. Some fans interpret Ging’s rare gesture as a sign of a deeper relationship between them, possibly indicating that they are Gon’s parents. However, this theory is largely dismissed by most fans, who consider the connection solely based on the fact that Gon and Cheadle both wear green.
Exploring Gon’s Family and Future
Hunter x Hunter currently has 400 chapters in total and is still being published, although it is currently on hiatus due to the health of the author, Yoshihiro Togashi. These health challenges have cast doubt on whether fans will ever see the manga’s conclusion or if Gon’s mother’s identity will ever be revealed. However, Togashi has outlined potential endings for the series, including one in case he cannot complete it himself, leading to speculation about its conclusion. Ending D suggests Gon’s likely granddaughter, Jin, finding contentment on an island, emphasizing family bonds despite unresolved lineage mysteries. However, Gon’s connections with Mito, Ging, and close friend Killua highlight the importance of chosen family and emotional ties, ensuring the series’ legacy lives on even amidst uncertainty about its future.
Hunter x Hunter is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
