The Nightsisters are a powerful coven of Force-sensitive witches in Star Wars, and Mother Talzin is one of the most powerful among them. Witches in Star Wars are not to be mistaken as evil, even if they draw their Force-magic from the Dark Side. Unlike most Jedi, witches are capable of wielding magic from both sides of the Force, without necessarily being aligned with either.
Because witches perceive the Force as the essence of all living things, they don’t associate Light and Dark as good or evil. It’s all simply the Living Force which witches use however they see fit. Therefore, while the Nightsisters of Dathomir may use Dark Magic, that doesn’t mean they are evil characters. The Great Mother Talzin was the matriarch on Dathomir, and she used her Dark Magic to protect her people. In doing so, she found herself battling both Jedi and Sith at some point. However, she has also served as an ally to both in Star Wars.
The History of the Blade Of Talzin
Lightsabers in Star Wars were considered the apex of weaponry. George Lucas originally intended for there to be nothing that could rival the lightsaber. But the inclusion of the witches’ magic, light arrows, and the Beskar spear helps level the battlefield between Force-users and other combatants. For instance, In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where the witches debuted onscreen, Mother Talzin was able to defend against Jedi Master Mace Windu’s lightsaber with a sword she conjured out of thin air. That flaming-green sword is known as the Blade of Talzin.
Mother Talzin proves how real and formidable her Dark Magic is, as she holds her own against the Jedi Master despite being in a severely weakened state. The Blade of Talzin was first seen onscreen in this duel with Mace Windu. It isn’t yet known how or from where the Blade is conjured. Imbued with Dark Magic, the Blade is one of the few weapons that can defend against lightsabers in Star Wars.
After Mother Talzin failed to restore herself with the Living Force in season 6, episode 9 of The Clone Wars, she and her sword both disappeared. The sword would later resurface in Ahsoka to be wielded by the new Nightsister, Morgan Elsbeth.
Morgan Elsbeth And The Blade Of Talzin
The Nightsisters of Peridea were able to conjure the Blade of Talzin for Morgan Elsbeth to use in her fight against Ahsoka. The Jedi defeated Morgan, who was a worthy adversary with the Blade. But the whereabouts of the sword are unknown by the end of the first season of Ahsoka. Does the sword return from where it was conjured?
If not, then it could now be in the hands of Ahsoka or Sabine. It would be awfully careless for the Nightsisters to leave such a powerful weapon around without a contingency plan or the ability to retrieve it. Considering that the Nightsisters, who were in another galaxy, were able to conjure the sword long after Talzin’s demise, it’s likely that they can also retrieve it by summoning it at will from wherever it is. That could mean that even if it falls into the hands of the enemy, it may not be in their possession for long.
The Significance of the Blade Of Talzin
The brief live-action debut of the Blade of Talzin can be positioned for Star Wars’ witches similarly to the Mandalorian’s Darksaber. According to Ahsoka, the Blade of Talzin can only be wielded by either the Great Mother of Dathomir or the strongest witch, giving the sword more cultural and story significance. It isn’t clear how the Dathomir witches are to be restored in Ahsoka. The Nightsisters’ resurrection spell is an option, which makes Morgan Elsbeth’s return possible as well.
The witches of Dathomir have a long history in Star Wars, just like the Jedi and Sith. Often marginalized and treated as outcasts, they live on one of the few known planets that’s brimming with the Dark Side of the Force. Their unique use of the Force and their largely irrelevant presence in the primary classes of Force-users puts them in a position of being repeatedly misused and manipulated, evidenced by Count Dooku’s treatment of Asajj Ventress and attack on Mother Talzin. Restoring this small but mighty class of warrior witches, while emphasizing the importance of the Blade of Talzin to protect them from both the Jedi and Sith, can pave the way for their own series similar to The Mandalorian. The choosing of the Great Mother of Dathomir could also feature more moments of how witches use Force-magic.
In any case, creating a legend around the Blade and who can be considered worthy of wielding it would make the sword more revered by witches and others. The curse of the Darksaber and the restrictions on who can wield it properly add story value to the saber, beyond its being one of a kind. The Blade of Talzin should be given the same treatment in Star Wars if it returns in Ahsoka.
