Warning: The following contains spoilers for Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 24, “Succession”, now available to stream on Crunchyroll.
With episode 24, Mushoku Tensei’s second season finally comes to an end. The episode wrapped up a lot of things as Rudeus finally returned home. Although his parents are now dead and incapacitated, the adventures born from the Teleport incident with respect to Rudeus’ family have finally come to an end.
Now, rather than looking for estranged members, it’s time to rebuild, and Rudeus seems to be turning into a man as he confronts his past and admits he didn’t really see Paul as his father because of his past memories. With his parents gone, a new wife (unofficial for now), and a child, the last episode of Mushoku Tensei’s second season wraps up nicely.
Rudeus Returns Home
Rudeus Relays The News Of Paul’s Death
Leaving Begaritt, Rudeus finally returns to Ranoa, and the anime focuses on Rudeus, who suddenly remembers the Man God’s words to him.
If you go to Begaritt, you’ll regret it. You’d travel to Begaritt and back. Would you leave your wife alone that whole time?—Man God
At the time, the Man God’s warning insinuated that something could happen to Sylphy, or Rudeus would miss the birth of his child. However, Rudeus gets home and has no regrets whatsoever. The series suddenly bringing it up insinuated that something had happened to Sylphy and his sisters, but since that’s not the case, two plausible situations are suggested. The focus on the Man God’s words could be to foreshadow an event that’ll happen in later seasons, or it could be to show that the Man God’s words don’t always come to pass.
After finding his wife and sisters safe, Rudeus relays news of his father’s death, and unsurprisingly, Norn lashes out almost instantly, asking how Paul could’ve died with Rudeus around him. It was not until she took note of Rudeus’ missing limb that she quieted down. This scene portrays how Norn sees Rudeus as embodying an ideal of perfectionism, even though fans seem to have accepted Rudeus’ flaws, which makes him a human being.
Norn’s Outburst And Sylphy’s Acceptance
Rudeus Gets A Second Support System
After sorting out Paul’s death, the main issue came into play. Rudeus had come home with another woman, even though he had recently married Sylphy and had a child on the way. To fans, Sylphy could’ve reacted either way, but Norn had an outburst on her behalf. Norn’s outburst was rash, unaccommodating, and inconsiderate considering Aisha and Lilia’s situation. However, whether or not she was right is highly dependent on perspective.
Contrary to Aisha’s outburst, Sylphy readily accepted Roxy, proclaiming that it was inevitable and a matter of time. With Eris out there, it really was a matter of time, but the timing and situation in which he brought another wife made it dicey.
Balancing Loss and New Beginnings
Rudeus Becomes A Father
The young Rudeus Greyrat has finally gone from boy to man, with a child to his name. Losing Paul and gaining a child may be Mushoku Tensei’s way of balancing the scales. With Rudeus’ evolution, the series once again shows what makes it stand out—its attention to the progressive lives of the characters. After giving birth, Sylphy’s first comment was on how grateful she was that her child didn’t have green hair, so she wouldn’t face discrimination like Sylphy did when she was a child.
Rudeus tearing up as he held his child was a beautiful moment that highlighted peace after all the chaotic events that have occurred in the series recently. And Rudeus seemed to savor the experience completely.
New Beginnings: What’s Next for Rudeus and Mushoku Tensei?
Rudeus Visits Paul’s Grave
To close the episode and the season, Rudeus visits Paul’s grave in a heartwarming moment and speeds his father up. Talking to his father’s grave highlights how Rudeus truly depended on Paul for support and how he’s truly thankful for everything that Paul did. Paul was undoubtedly not the best father, but in moments when it mattered most, he always rose to the challenge. While it might be medicine after death to see Paul as his father after he’s passed, Rudeus realizes what’s truly important to him and matures.
As the final scenes of the season rolled off the screen, Ruijerd and Badigadi were seen traveling together, and Eris was seen standing. These things make fans excited for what’s yet to come.
How the next season will play out is eagerly awaited by fans, especially to see what next adventure Rudeus will face. He started to make money to send himself and Sylphy to school, and so he went to become a tutor for Eris. Next, the Teleport Incident sent him to the Demon Continent, and he had to find his way back. After finding his way, he had to find his family members and did so, arguably tying most of the loose nuts that have to do with his personal life.
As the next season is expected to start on a clean slate in terms of danger and adventure, Mushoku Tensei is sure to take fans on a ride.
