MapleStory Announces Webcomic Developed by Solo Leveling’s Studio

MapleStory was all the rage in the early 2000s, but the game may make its triumphant comeback more than 20 years later.

According to Manga Mogura RE, MMORPG MapleStory will receive an action fantasy webtoon and webnovel, as revealed during MapleStory’s 20th anniversary live stream. Redice Studio, which has produced works such as Solo Leveling, will develop the two works. Redice Studio has not announced a release date for either.

Maple Story’s Success as an MMORPG

Developed by Wizet, MapleStory, a 2D scrolling platform MMORPG, launched in April 2003. In the game, players roam around the Maple World and defeat monsters. The first major arc of the game revolves around the players fighting against the Black Wings, who have been trying to revive the Black Mage. The second arc begins in the realm of Grandis where the antagonist Gerand Darmoor believes his race is superior to all. NECORD (ASTERIA) composes MapleStory’s music, and their soundtrack has received positive reviews. The music has been a point of nostalgia for many former players. MapleStory has grossed over $3 billion worldwide in lifetime revenue as of 2020.

This isn’t the first time MapleStory has received a media adaptation. Madhouse (Season 1 of One-Punch Man, Trigun and Death Note) produced an anime adaptation that aired from October 2007 to March 2008 with 25 episodes. The anime follows a warrior named Al who seeks to revive the World Tree after the evil organization Black Wings destroys it. MapleStory also received a trading card game, a mobile adaptation, and a Facebook gaming format adaptation, although the latter has been discontinued since 2013.

Aside from Solo Leveling, Redice Studio has developed Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint and Tomb Raider King. The studio mainly adapts webnovels into webtoons. Notably, the CEO of Redice Studio, Jang Sung-Rak, was the artist for Solo Leveling, where his artwork, under the pen name Dubu, has garnered an overwhelmingly positive reception from fans. Following the conclusion of the Solo Leveling webcomic, Jang passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage stemming from an ongoing health issue in July 2022.

There is no release date for the webtoon or webnovel as of this article’s publication.
